She is more or less defective body parts glued together with weak threads of who she thinks she needs to be for those around her. Shane East is one of my favorite narrators- he does an amazing job with emotions, pacing, and he has a perfect voice for Aiden (I've actually been in a Shane East audiobook binge and he's perfect for all the characters he plays because he kind of just has the perfect voice and accent.
The characters are compelling and wholesome, the pace is spot on - and the setting is so easy to imagine. Despite everything we tried to do to help my little dude fight, the cancer was just more aggressive than we could treat. Her actual accent wasn't too bad and the emotions and mood that she injected into the story were spot on. In Steel Princess, there are references throughout Aiden’s POVs of his worldview; he’s the player; manipulation won’t work on him anymore. You want to know what’s going to happen next, and you can’t help but salivate over Aiden’s darkness and Elsa’s strength to try to push him away.
So Elsa starts her high school career at Royal Elite (lol) in England and on her very first day she's minding her own business when Aiden King (lol) comes out of nowhere, LITERALLY grabs her by the neck and shoves her against the wall with his whole soccer team just laughing on, and tells her he will destroy her. But I don’t understand resulting complications–then again I believe that is by far the last thing I should be cross-examining. Finding that sweet spot (pun intended) where we can still enjoy our darker, more villainous hero and scenes that skirt beyond the bounds of “normal”, all while not hating the characters or feeling entirely uncomfortable with certain actions and situations, is incredibly difficult. The only warning is in the description and it only says that there are some things some might find offensive. There are a few dark romances that I felt held some similar plot devices to this novel, but at this point, the genre is littered by derivatives.
She is strong and confident, scared and fearless, clear headed and confused and most of all full of hate and loving. Previous three books establish Ronan as his best friend, but he comments against this, suggesting he tells his secrets to Aiden. Elsa Steel, on the other hand, is a fierce and resilient protagonist who refuses to be broken by Aiden's cruelty. i wasn't attached to the characters or romance (two very important things for me when picking up a book).
It's a book that's both unpredictable yet doesn't keep you completely in the dark just to keep pumping out books for cash (the author kindly leaves some breadcrumbs for you to put the puzzle together as more information is revealed without giving away all the nitty gritty details). This is a dark high school bully romance, mature new adult, and contains dubious situations that some readers might find offensive. Her heroes are often killers and anti-heroes and her books are always sprinkled with darkness, angst, violence, and lots of heat. As long as we have a massive TBR pile on our bookshelves, or Kindle Unlimited, we can shelter in place for days, weeks, months.Before diving into the review, here are some mild triggers you need to be mindful of – it’s a Dark Romance, the hero is more of an anti-hero, and there are some dubious scenes that some might find uncomfortable, but if, like me, you enjoy dark heroes – this one is right up your alley. A boy who throttles an unsuspecting girl he DOESN’T know after he JUST makes eye contact with her is anything but menacing.
