About this deal

It is, however, very Euro-centric, so if you want something a little more global in scope this might not be it. For nearly thirty years, during which it has been continuously in print, Jeffrey Russells A History of Witchcraft has been the one authoritative concise illustrated history of witchcraft. Once a tool invented by demonologists to hurt and silence their enemies, witch trials have been twisted and transformed over the course of history and the lines between witch and witch-hunter blurred. We offer also brings a real emotional perspective to his work, as he isn't afraid to comment on the barbarism and cruelty Central to The craze.

Providing readers with a comprehensive account of everything from Japanese folklore and Indian witchcraft to the differences between black and white magic, and dispelling myths such as those surrounding the voodoo doll and Ouija, the book explores the common human fascination with spells, superstition, and the supernatural.En resumen hace un pequeño recorrido histórico sobre la brujería muy generalizada centrándose al final en Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda.

The immersive and tragic history of a witch trial in Bideford, Devon, England in 1682 puts the “witches” back at the centre of their story and tries to imagine their world with sympathy and insight. It's hard understanding beliefs which many people and myself today find almost impossible to take seriously.Famous works such as “ Hocus Pocus ” and the “ The Juggler’s Oracle “ drew heavily on “Witchcraft,” thus spreading the very mysteries that Scot had hoped to quell.

I don't usually enjoy historical books, specially if they are non-fiction, but I must say i enjoyed reading this one. And difficult to read when it is repeatedly stating - witches do exist, but whatever they do, or people feel they do, is imagination.

She is the author of seven academic books on witches in history and literature: Reading Witchcraft; Possession, Puritanism, and Print; Witchcraft Myths in American Culture; Imagining the Pagan Past; Rediscovering Renaissance Witchcraft; Witchcraft: The Basics and, with Jo Esra, Shakespeare’s Demonology. Features spell-binding historic and contemporary pictures that perfectly capture the key characters, events and wonders of this captivating, colourful and controversial history.
