About this deal

To attack, you simply choose a player and that player must either remove a single clan figure from the territory or discard an action card. I love games that are not decided until the final moment, and the Epic Tale cards do an incredible job of capturing that magic for Inis. Your enemies never truly know what win condition are you going after, but the pretender token makes it so that the winner doesn't come out of nowhere. Firstly the attacked player may hide troops in any citadels present, otherwise you take turns attacking (which results in the attackee discarding an action card or losing one clan) until either the players agree a truce, or one player emerges victorious.

The plastic miniatures are also a nice addition to the components, and I’m glad that there are a variety of characters even though they all have the same use. Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. It’s often better to do that than to make a game that will be generally liked by more people, but truly loved by fewer. These gigantic, vividly illustrated tiles are in the shape of a Triskel (a Celtic symbol featured prominently in the game), with craggy edges that fit together like the most metal jigsaw puzzle ever. And the good news there is – it’s actually great at the two player count, but you obviously lose out on a lot of what likely makes Inis exceptional. The equally beautiful cards draw from Celtic lore, and the rule book even goes into further explanation of the key characters and events from this mythos. Between action cards, epic tale cards, advantage cards and territory passives there are so many opportunities that you never know how a game will play out.

Then Player D sprung one last move to give him five Sanctuaries + his lone Deed, for two total VCs and a narrow lead. Battles will occur, of course, as the Celtic clans can be unruly and a good player will listen to his clan's people (i. The table had become the board at this point, with island tiles occupying weird corners of the table where we could squeeze them in.With the addition of a new place to claim toward victory, and a new ability to claim, bringing out a new tile is an event for everyone in play. I’ve been on both sides of games where one player seems well positioned and appears to have victory well in hand, when another player pulls off a move that totally turns the tables and steals the win right at the death.

It’s more drawn out that it should be and full of frustrating holds, counter-holds and counter-counter holds. On their turn, a player may instead choose to withdraw his forces to a neighboring territory he controls. e., have more clan figures than any other player — of territories containing at least six opponents’ clans. Furthermore, broadcasting your strategy can provide your opponents with a blueprint of how to stop you.The trouble is when you have achieve one or more of them you must signal this to the other players by taking a pretender token. If we’re playing a game where we’re big noble space empires fighting over a map, and someone’s choice of a “culture card” or an “auxiliary action” causes the dominant player to lose the game, that takes you out of what can be a powerfully immersive experience. Criticism the Third: the game could be over in 30 minutes or two and a half hours, which makes it hard to recommend.

A player is considered “chieftain” of a given territory when he has more units there than any other player. The expansion (discussed more below) also adds in a module that mitigates this somewhat, one that provides a few rewards designed to usher the most harried or put-upon player(s) back to competitive relevance. This means that Inis becomes a battle to not only achieve a win condition but either do it in such a way that it becomes impossible for the other players to combat, or go all out on every win condition and hope that it’s enough. Lastly, the limited card pool allows you to effectively deny cards to your opponent during the draft. They could simply be inserted into the base game (minus one Epic Tale card), and an unsuspecting player could be taught the base game’s rules and never even know they didn’t originally come with the game.
