About this deal

Laing wrote a considerable number of works, mainly studies into forms of mental illness and his own developed theories of psychotherapy. Like Blake, he had an awfully warm and fuzzy feeling that EMPATHIZING with folks instead of just giving a diagnosis, prescription and pill was one end of a Golden Thread. And through them all the emphasis is on the possibilities for self‐deception and mutual mystifi cation. So I'm proposing a reading of Knots as possibly carrying a very beneficial side effect--a reading might alert us to patterns that can really knot up our own life. One can discern an approximate focus in each—love, possessiveness, under standing, fear, the nature of being— but all these themes are echoed in each knot.

In “Knots,” his most recent book, Laing continues to explore some of the themes that have been prominent in his work since 1958. He never actually denied the existence of mental illness - indeed he admitted that he was a clinical depressive himself - but unlike his contemporaries Laing believed it could be a transformative experience. It was securely packed and in very good condition - pretty much as described by the seller, if anything, somewhat better than they made it sound. To preserve these articles as they originally appeared, The Times does not alter, edit or update them. So many layers are used to arrive at a single point that at a glance, the entire book would appear absurd. I'd bet a neuroscientist somewhere has by our time used a CAT scan or some other wonder to map a human mind thinking this way thus forming what appears beautiful recursive cascades. I read this poetry collection years ago and marveled at the brilliance and wit Laing tooled into each poem.

Be that as it may, when I ended my bitter tenure under much more experienced and cynical arbiters of law than I, I still would not recant. If you know someone who is having interpersonal problems you may want to consider giving them this book. Why and how it gripped me and moved me and challenged me and taught me and thrilled me and tickled me and even (productively) infuriated me--trying to pin any of it down seems futile. A "fascinating departure" for this wildly controversial psychoanalyst, this volume consists of "powerful, witty, unexpected dialogue-scenarios that can be read as poems or a brief play," each describing a type of relationship--the "knots" of the title.
