Whilst looking for a rum substitute 500 years ago, Spanish conquistadors created the premium spirit Mezcal. It almost seems like sacrilege but it does work well with traditional tequila lemon/lime and salt, would have been rude not to at least try this. It's delicious, the hangover was pretty benign and it's head-and-shoulders the best agave-based drink that I have ever had. It’s a novelty item at best, in a tacky bottle with etched Mexican symbols, a screw ca, and a worm floating in colored, turpentine-flavored alcohol. Doesn't have that kick and chlorophylly type taste which most tequila do, so this stuff is more pre night out shots or the occasional treat.
