About this deal

By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. They helped place the excerpt or essay in context and really enhanced my ability to understand the theory. In a life full of reading books, there are few books that have given me so much satisfaction to be done with.

Distinguished Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to experience some new (and in some cases improved) translations of familiar works, particularly a selection of wonderfully eloquent excerpt from Nietzsche's 'Birth of Tragedy' translated by Ronald Spiers which was a refreshing change from my Kauffmann and Hollingdale editions. Sin embargo, el libro estaba manchado por el lado (en la foto se ve mejor de lo que es) y las esquinas como si se hubieran golpeado. Overall this book is excellent, and I would thoroughly recommend it to any student considering further education. However, as a particularly mobile student, I've lugged mine all over the place and as yet it has not been rendered damaged.

Obviously, some excerpts are covered in more detail than others, as the book is only approximately 2700 pages long and therefore doesn't contain the full publications by each of these figures, merely snippets and excerpts. But from what I did read I liked Postcolonialism the best and I really liked reading Freud's essays. New selections from non-western theory and a thoroughly updated twentieth century selection make the book even more diverse and authoritative. Really a book about thinking and sociocultural-historical-philosophical-artistic developments in all areas. If this hadn't been a good read, all these travels from home to parent's home and to uni with it in my backpack would have been for nothing. My end result is a list of books/theorists to explore and my 1st impressions of them jotted into a notebook or onto this table of contents. The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism is the gold standard for anyone who wishes to understand the development and current state of literary theory. A prominent medievalist and feminist critic, Professor Finke is the author of Cinematic Illuminations: The Middle Ages on Film (Johns Hopkins UP), King Arthur and the Myth of History (University Press of Florida), Feminist Theory, Women's Writing (Cornell UP) and Women's Writing in English: The Middle Ages (Longman) and the editor of Medieval Texts and Contemporary Readers (Cornell UP).This is one of those massive tomes that you will drag out in the wee desperate hours of essay writing. The first edition was published in 2001, with a second edition published in 2010 and a third in 2018. These (glaring) omissions make possible the inclusion of what is probably an excessive number of hip Europeans and North Americans who are products of the cultural studies movement but, though I love them, aren't nearly as important long-term as, say, Émile Zola, Oswald de Andrade or Octavio Paz. I got this for only 20 bucks and over the course of a year and a half I got much more than my money's worth out of it. This is a monstrous anthology; it was used as the primary textbook for my Critical Theory and Literary Criticism course (ENGL 602 at University of Maryland).
