About this deal

If you like taking close up pictures of small things the TOUGH TG4 won’t dissapoint you; it has the best macro shooting features of any compact I’ve seen, water-proof or not. Switch the dial to the Super Macro position and the TOUGH TG4 can close focus to 1cm. Better than that, you can use the zoom and even at its full 4x extent the closest focus remains at 1cm. That not only means you can get bigger shots of very small things, but you can avoid casting shadows on your subject with the camera body. And on the subject of lighting, the optional LG-1 Light Guide attaches to the lens to provide even illumination for macro photography. The Olympus Tough TG-4 takes what made its predecessor a winner, including its build quality, fast lens (at wide-angle) and performance, and adds support for Raw shooting. By using Raw photographers can squeeze the very best image quality out of the TG-4, which makes it stand out from its JPEG-only competitions. It's not a perfect camera, though, with limited aperture choices in manual mode and unimpressive video quality.

Above left: 100% crop, 4.5-18mm at 18mm, 1/10, 100 ISO, IS off. Above right: 100% crop, 4.5-18mm at 18mm, 1/10, 100 ISO, IS on.If you read my comment at all, you'd see that I use both Windows (10 of course) and Mac. I am quite fluent in both. I am an IT professional, so I will put that up against whatever googling you might do. It really shows that compacts have reached their limits, and that progress for the TYGs have been extremely slow, although quite good-looking! We have owned this camera for about a week and have been very disappointed in the image quality in all but the macro mode. In comparison to our old Sony DSC TX "tough" camera the image quality of the Olympus is poor, even with the big jump in megapixels. I would say that the image quality is worse than my iPhone and of course sub-human compared to our Sony Alpha. The processing that this camera is puts on the jpeg photos is very over-done and leaves a blue hue to pixels in transitions from light to dark not observed with the Sony DSC.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 vs Olympus TG-2 iHS - Versus Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 vs Olympus TG-2 iHS - Versus

From the front, the TG-4 looks seriously contemporary and muscular. It’s all hard edges and is almost industrial in its design. Despite the bog standard image sensor, there is no mistaking that this is a viable alternative than your smartphone or iPad for taking snaps at the beach or on the ski slopes. In other words, and this is important, it actually has a reason to exist independently. With a total of 16.8 megapixels, the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 has five still image resolution options, 4608 x 3456, 3264 x 2448, 2048 x 1536, 640 x 480 pixels respectively. The camera has an effective image stabilizer system that ensures clear and stable images in low light conditions and while moving. My Pan did 2y before the seals lost integrity. How long should Oly seals last following all precautions? Built-in Wi-Fi lets you share files with iOS and Android mobile devices, geotag photos with GPS location information, remotely compose the shot, adjust camera settings, and trip the shutter, apply custom signatures, Art filters, and stamps, using the Olympus O.I.Share app. feet is more than one atmosphere, next to no one dives to that depth without scuba gear, and being able to dive to that depth with scuba gear takes specialized training, beyond a normal scuba certification class.

Why is Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 better than Olympus TG-2 iHS?

The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 features a 4x optical zoom lens, with a bright aperture of f/2.0, and is equivalent to 25mm to 100mm in 35mm terms. The sensor is a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, with sensor-shift image stabilisation to help keep shots sharp in low light or when using the optical zoom. I have this camera. It is great. The only negative, and it is a big one, is that the app on Android is terrible and rarely connects (at least one an LG V30). Although the basic specs are similar to a point and shoot compact and the camera can be used as such in everyday life, in terms of whether it represents value for money the Olympus TG-4 is probably best when viewed as a specific tool for a specific task. You’re not going to be considering buying this unless you definately want a camera to throw about a bit and not have it break. Whilst the type of person who would shoot Raw files might not typically be the person who would be buying a camera of this type, it’s a nice little bonus. In terms of low light shooting, as with pretty much any compact camera with a 1/2.3-inch sensor, ideally you do want to stray above ISO800 or ISO1600 at a push. With the Olympus TG-4 detail is noticeably breaking up/softening and colour draining at ISO3200 and above, with ISO6400 only really an option if you’re particularly desperate to achieve any shot at all, whatever the cost. ISO 100 prints are good at 13 x 19 inches, which is a reasonably large size for such a small sensor. There is a decent amount of fine detail and pleasing colors at this size, although for critical printing purposes the 11 x 14 inch prints here are slightly sharper.

Lastly, the TG-6's host of close-up features not only allow for capturing subjects 1cm (0.4") away: the 'digital microscope' mode lets you zoom in up to four times more, though with a reduction in image quality. Olympus sells a ring light and flash diffuser to add flexibility to your macro photography. BTW, if it starts with an "i", I don't own it, like iPhones, iPads, iMacs, iMacbooks, etc... Why, because I can't stand Apple or Mac products of any kind. I hope I answered your questions. ;) Alexis D, it's pretty ridiculous of you to call anyone else's comments ridiculous without actually doing the research yourself on which phone camera is objectively "best". Once connected the app offers four main options: Remote Control, Import Photos, Edit Photo and Add Geotag. Tapping Remote Control lets you see a live image from the camera and refocus it by tapping on your phone or tablet’s screen. Impressively you can remotely change the exposure mode between iAUTO, Aperture priority, Super Macro, and Scene mode without touching the camera’s mode dial. Depending on the selected mode, you can then tap to adjust the aperture, exposure compensation, ISO and white balance, along with changing the drive mode, and of course triggering the exposure. The drive mode menu also has an option for movie recording which uses the movie mode currently set on the camera. Some art filters have altered versions of the original art filter. (e.g. Pin Hole II, Pin Hole III) Color Filter and Monochrome Color options are available with some art filters. I dont care much about extra data written to the file you record. Its pointless. Wideangle shots are fine. Postprocessing in Resolve is a breeze. Im looking to get an underwater camera and everybody seems to praise the olympus, even from last year's TG-3. Judging by the samples, the quality is terrible underwater. No definition and lots of noise and haze... The Olympus Tough TG-4 is a weatherised digital compact camera announced by Olympus Corporation on April 13, 2015. It differs from its predecessor, the Olympus Tough TG-3, by including raw image recording. Good for: Photographers who want a compact camera which can dive further and take an incredible beating while still producing solid image quality.
