About this deal

Out of the 75,000 hectares in the Cognac appellation area, Grande Champagne has 13,800 hectares and Petite Champagne has 16,200 hectares.

There is also reason to believe that when the Roman armies fought, they preferred, naturally, to do so in such areas. The palate opens up to deliver a hearty and mellow body that’s alive with the fruity flavours of fresh figs, bananas, red berry coulis, manuka honey and a touch of truffle, rounded out with warming spices that evoke the spirit of Christmas. It is incomparable in its sheer depth and intensity of flavour, its fruitiness, warmth and complexity and both its richness and subtlety of bouquet. One of the "big four" Cognac houses, Rémy Martin is best known for producing some of the world's best Fine Champagne Cognac (a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne spirit - the two premier appellations in the Cognac region). After all, with your newfound knowledge you can truly impress your friends, and what better way to do so than by offering a taste of some Cognacs grown in different growth areas. The Appellation Cognac Fine Champagne Contrôlée (Cognac Fine Champagne registered designation of origin) is ascribed to cognac of which the eaux-de-vie are exclusive to Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, with a minimum of 50% Grande Champagne.

Grapes grown in the chalky soils of both Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne tend to create an eau-de-vie that is superior to those of their neighbors. On the palate: a rounded, well-balanced Cognac with multiple layers of ripe fruit and subtle notes of liquorice. This cooperative brings together a thousand wine growers from Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne. If you compare the soil of the Grande Champagne to the Petite Champagne, you’ll find that the soil is less airy and more compact. It can only carry the name Champagne if it is produced in the Champagne region of Northern France, and is made adhering to very strict rules. If a cru is mentioned on the label, this means that 100% of the eaux-de-vie which make up that cognac come from that cru. This unique cognac is fruity, silky, well-balanced, and rounded, ideal for sipping near, over ice or in serious cocktails. Hence the word ‘campagna’ became associated with such areas, and this eventually was modified into the word, Champagne’.

In 1927, Rémy Martin created VSOP Fine Champagne and since 1948, every cognac from Rémy Martin has the Cognac Fine Champagne designation.During the 19th century, Charentais geologist Henri Coquand devoted himself to numerous studies on the nature of cognac-producing soil, and his studies resulted in the official delimitation of the different crus. Fine Champagne is produced from eaux-de-vie from two crus (Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne), which have very chalky soil. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
