About this deal

Evanelle was a distant relation, a second or third or fourteenth cousin, and she was the only other Waverley still living in Bascom.

I desperately want to go live in Bascom and fall asleep in the Waverley's garden and let the magic and sweetness fill my every hour with its heady sense of possibility. I have not read many novels in the magical realism genre–elements of magic inside a world that is otherwise just like ours. The Waverleys have long lived in this small town of Bascom, North Carolina, and most everyone agrees they are a bit odd. Legend has it that their feisty apple tree is enchanted, and that eating its fruit can show you the future. However, even while a former girlfriend of his stays at his home for a couple of days, Tyler finds himself still attracted to Claire. Claire gives Sydney a job with her catering company and the sisters’ first job together is working an event hosted by Sydney’s ex-boyfriend Hunter and his wife Emma. The secondary cast of characters, a few of whom have their own POVs (but only for one or two chapters) were well-rounded, interesting, and reflected some of the same themes we see Sydney and Claire struggling with (stuck in the past and lonely). And Claire, of course, has the gift of not just cooking but also understanding how specific plants, herbs, spices, and flowers affect both food and individuals.

Even though Claire thinks she isn’t here to stay, it seems that from the time Sydney arrives in town, she has no intentions of leaving, the wanderlust quenched for now and the only thought to provide a safe and stable home for her daughter. GARDEN SPELLS is a rare and mesmerizing novel, brimming with light and fierce joy and the sharp shadows that must accompany such a tale.Though Allen's prose can lean toward the pedestrian and the romance subplots feel perfunctory, the blending of horticultural folklore, the supernatural and a big dollop of Southern flavor should find favor with a wide swath of readers.

Tyler comes to pick Sydney up and Claire alters the food with flowers from her garden that cause the partygoers to regret their treatment of Sydney. The blending of horticultural folklore, the supernatural and a big dollop of Southern flavor should find favor with a wide swath of readers. This is Southern charm at its most beguiling, with characters you'll take to your heart, a delicious love story, and a magical garden you'll wish was in your own backyard. Evanelle is known in the community for giving people strange gifts which later become exactly what they didn’t know they needed—a flashlight before an unexpected power outage, for example. We welcome respectful dialogue related to speculative fiction in literature, games, film, and the wider world. I enjoyed the sprinkling of other POVs because it fleshed out parts of the story to create a fuller world for the book. The book provides instructions for designing a lover's floral clock, and for making pot pourries which will bless the house, give hope to lovers and inspire creative works.

It was good exposure to get her name out among the university crowd, because they only expected good food with a splash of originality, whereas the people in town who had lived there all their lives came to her to cater affairs with a specific agenda-to get something off your chest and be assured the other person wouldn't speak of it again, to secure a promotion, or to mend a friendship. She explores the magical properties of trees, herbs and flowers, and shows how, by fostering the growth of herbs that have proven healing powers, one can create a magical garden. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear.Welcome to Bascom, North Carolina, where it seems that everyone has a story to tell about the Waverley women. TL;DR: A charming tale about coming home, even if you’re already there, Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is as magical as the Waverly’s garden.
