Being abused doesn't make him not guilty it would only have ever been a mitigating circmstance anyway.

And bearing in mind this case was well publicised if the Headmaster had been a bully and a person who beat 6 year olds I would have expected many people to have used the opportunity to come forward and testify , in fact I would have expected the defence to have actively sort out fellow old pupils to testify to this man being a bully, but no one did testify, which to me speaks volumes. Those punishments were horrific but now things have gone to the other extreme where teachers frequently suffer abuse. And since almost everyone on the thread has agreed that what he did was wrong even if he was beaten and bullied by the head as a child what would be the point of his lawyer pursuing that tack whcih even if investigated and proved true he'd get the same sentence. It might have felt surreal but we have to admit that soon there will be many students and apprentices my age presenting themselves in a similar position to be punished by professors or bosses for any number of misdemeanors. I would think we only have the accused's word for the caning,in an article I read the guy was saying he was bullied by the teacher too.Once in assembly something happened, I don't remember what, maybe a kid dicking around or even fainting as they did now and again.

If his mitigation was that he was drunk, then he has no mitigation, and his actions were just like many 100os of thugs across the Country. One who springs to mind was massively disorganised and the class would become more and more rowdy as he cocked up his lesson plan, any other teacher would have reined it in but he continued to flap and we continued to play up until ultimately he blew his top and either hit a child or trotted out some entirely spurious class punishment.
