After three brutal months in captivity, sold multiple times by various ISIS militants, Nadia managed to escape with the help of a Sunni Arab man, Nasser, and his family – pretending to be his wife as they fled to Iraqi Kurdistan. In 2007 a few of those extremists drove a fuel tanker and three cars into the busy centers of two Yazidi towns about ten miles northwest of Kocho, then blew up the vehicles, killing the hundreds of people who had rushed to them, many thinking they were bringing goods to sell at the market.

The book follows normal teenage struggles like not fitting in and finding it difficult to make friends, and finding refuge in something strange in this case horror movies. There’s a fascinating account of Yazidi culture and religion, the labyrinthine politics of the region pre and post Saddam Hussein, and the shifting alliances that left the Yazidis stranded. Most village disputes were solved by Ahmed Jasso, our practical and diplomatic mukhtar, and he sided with Hezni.
