About this deal

The 2x72 is the industry standard for professional knife making. Partially due to the vast array of belts available for the grinder, as well as being a generally powerful and still reasonably compact machine. There are a wide variety of options available, ranging from building one yourself to buying a top of the line professional grade grinder, designed to suit a Bladesmith perfectly.

There is no centralized source of truth for these terms. Manufacturers of these machines will often refer to them as sanders. People in the abrasives industry will often refer to grinders as machines that use wheels, rather than belts. Knife makers will refer to these tools as belt grinders – I have heard some knife makers say that belt sanders refer to tools designed for woodworking. Who’s right? What terminology should you use? Hell if I know, I just know knife makers generally call these machines belt grinders. Belt Grinder Accessories Also Available at: Walmart , Lowe’s 8. Best Wider Belt Grinder—Rikon 50-112 4-Inch x 36-Inch Belt 6-Inch Disc Sander Zircuonium can handle steel better than aluminum oxide belts, but they wear out faster than ceramic belts. Overall a 1x30 is a great low-cost option to get into knife making. If you decide to use this size of grinder, keep in mind that it is essential to use good ceramic based abrasives; otherwise, the grinder won't perform to its full potential. Plenty of incredible knife makers (Will Stelter included) started with this machine and it is a sure-fire way to help ignite your knife making passion but you will end up outgrowing it if you're serious about knife making. Our Cibo Ceramic belts also contain the latest technology grinding aids on the belt which will further increase belt life and reduce heat during the grinding process. Ceramic grains are tougher and more durable than zirconia so the more aggressive the application, the greater the potential benefit The vertically configured 2x72's are an excellent grinder for the money and will out-perform most smaller grinders. They're an excellent option for hobbyists or for those just finding out if knife making is something they'd like to pursue. A wider belt exerts more friction on the flat platen of a machine, needing more power and a longer belt allows for less time between belt changes but will also demand extra power. The Shop Fox W1843 Knife Belt Sander is the best choice for serious knife makers. It’s got a 1-HP, 14-amp motor that spins the 2-inch wide belt at 4,500 FPM, with fast single-lever belt changes and a dead-stable build.

Once you have a good solid grinder, you will want to put good belts on them. I will go over the different types of belts below: 4 types of abrasive belts: FF87 is our more flexible ceramic abrasive sanding belt. We particularly recommend the FF87 belts for finer sanding with powerfile machines and also with tube polishers. Some direct drive belt grinders have an option for variable speed. This is the best of both worlds, as these belt grinders have more versatility. Users can adjust the speed to match their growing skill sets, a certain material, or a particular blade. Motor Power
