About this deal

I'd heartily recommend this to anyone who want's a light hearted heartwarming read and a bit of a giggle. The tension is in watching a child with Carr’s flamboyance unknowingly navigate the rampant homophobia of the 80s while his mother, Christine, fiercely beats away sneering neighbours.

Dicey reluctantly allows himself to be described as co-author of Allen Carr books but makes it very clear, "I take great pleasure in deflecting any praise for the books (quite rightly so) to Allen Carr. I'm really only familiar with his show Chatty Man, but the stories about his others shows and gigs were still entertaining. Photograph: Matt Frost/ITV View image in fullscreen Remarkable … Oliver Savell as young Alan and Shaun Dooley as Graham. In 2020, it was estimated that Allen Carr's Easyway method had helped more than 50 million people worldwide.

I loved reading about how hard it is to break into professional stand up comedy and that if you're not sucesful you could be forever condemend to the likes of the comedy club and jongluers. When I probe into anything psychological – comedians, famously, have a higher incidence of mental health issues compared with the general population – he bats me away. Carr said: "Since I smoked my final cigarette, 23 years ago, I have been the happiest man in the world. How much he’d struggled in lockdown (he put on three stone in seven months), not just because Drayton is an alcoholic but also because Carr is a workaholic who was on the phone daily to his agent, badgering, hounding, desperate for something to do. Whereas it had come in the night and left the other boys with chiselled, stubbly chins and deep masculine voices, I'd been left with a huge pair of knockers and the voice of a pensioner. When Eddie Izzard was a guest on Chatty Man and asked Carr when he came out of the closet, he replied that he was "never really in" and other children were already making fun of his camp behaviour when he was eight or nine years old.

The book follows Alan’s life as an awkward child to just when his comedy career is really taking off. Carr made his radio presenting debut on Christmas Day 2007 for BBC Radio 2 as part of their Festive Highlights with the show Alan Carr's Christmas Box.Hopefully you will find it witty, fun, heartwarming, but more importantly honest, and that it will keep you entertained every time you pick it up. A great read (if you share Alan's sense of humour) but it's not a complete story or in any way serious - just good fun. While reading this book I particularly enjoyed the parts where he talks about his childhood, his pushy father, his school days, life at University, temp work and then when he goes travelling.

Recently, he joked he’d won custody of Adele in the divorce, but today he is reluctant to talk about her. I haven't read Alan Carr's first book (yet) but that didn't hinder my enjoyment of this one which picks up where the last finished. Based on their full money-back guarantee (which requires two follow-up sessions without reimbursement of travel), Carr's clinics claim 90% success rate in aiding smokers to stop for three months, and 51% [7] success rate in helping smokers stop for 12 months based on an independent study not connected with any health organisation. What he struggled with though was the monotony and travel, as much as he found genuine joy in the creativity and performance so you can see why his "act" has transitioned away from predominantly stand-up performance. Definitely preferred his first book as (in agreement with other reviews I've read) this book just feels a bit all over the place structurally.
