After the Emperor's death, Baudolino and his friends set off on a long journey, encompassing 15 years, to find the Kingdom of Prester John. In 1174, according to tradition, he appeared on the bastions of the city and put to flight the Imperial troops who were besieging the city. Here, in this set-piece, is a clue to why this novel is not, as a novel, anywhere near as successful as The Name of the Rose. Baudolino, both a beloved adopted son to the Emperor and a loyal native of the newly founded and highly rebellious town of Alessandria, plays a key role in reconciliation between the Emperor and the Alessandria townspeople, who are led by Baudolino's biological father; a way is found for the Emperor to recognize Alessandria's independence without losing face. At one point, he falls in love with a female satyr-like creature who recounts to him the full Gnostic creation myth (Gnosticism is a pervasive presence in another of Eco's novels, Foucault's Pendulum). As he and Niketas wait for the chaos in the burning city to subside, Baudolino narrates the story of his extraordinary life and his continuing quest for the mythical kingdom of Prester John.Born in 1137, in what later becomes the city of Alessandria, a chance childhood encounter with Holy Roman Emperor Frederick the Great rescues Baudolino from his impoverished environment. Eco’s trademark games with language and narrative structure are just as apparent in Baudolino as they are in his previous novels, as is the humor with which he broaches these difficult ideas about history and language. In Paris, he gains friends (such as the Archpoet, Abdul, Robert de Boron and Kyot, the purported source of Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival) and learns about the legendary kingdom of Prester John.

At court and on the battlefield, he is educated in reading and writing Latin and learns about the power struggles and battles of northern Italy at the time.To make things even more interesting, most of Baudolino's story is narrated by himself, giving the 'unreliable narrator' trope to a whole new level.

The young Baudolino’s desire to construct his own version of reality is to become a recurring theme in the novel, for when his theft of Otto’s manuscripts appears to be on the brink of discovery, Baudolino simply forges new ones from his own imagination. He's a cunning and imaginitive fabricator of religious mysteries, yes, but he soon discovers that the world is inhabited by liars far more cruel and accomplished than he. Niketas is amazed by his language genius, speaking many languages he has never heard, and Baudolino begins to recount his life story to Niketas.

Like George MacDonalnd Fraser, Eco looks at history through the skewed eye of a born cheat, liar and charlatan with a gift for languages and an eye for the ladies. There's just one other thing that marks Eco out as being not only master of this genre but also of others. I know for what cause you are coming, but that which you have been sent to ask cannot be done since the boy is dead. Without in any way being dry or academic, Eco puts us right in the middle of the philosophical debates of the age, linking us at first hand to Barbarossa, Abelard and Eloise. For those that want them to be, Name of the Rose and Baudolino are as questioningly post-modern as they come. In one of the early episodes Baudolino purchases the alleged bodies of the three biblical Magi and then swaps their Eastern clothes for something more in line with the current European fashion to make them seem more 'authentic'. It is a modern would-be rollicking tale, sprawling over time and place, fact and fantasy, and - apart, significantly, from its opening - it has no real voice of its own. It is an examination of the deep need for explanatory stories - myths, fables, chronicles, family traditions, science - and works in codes and layers that resemble the medieval methods of biblical interpretation as much as modern semiotics.During the siege, Baudolino works on the side of Frederick Barbarossa, but concocts a plan to help win the Alessandrian townspeople independence. this is a book for the intellect (Eco doesn't spare you from thinking), the reader (it's trendously well written), and the funny bone (Baudolinos escapades are as funny as anything in Flashman).
