An interesting point that I particularly noted on this reading, is that when Beauty's mother tells someone about the situation at home, saying he slapped her and twisted her wrist, and perhaps she and Beauty could get a council flat or stay in a refuge, the response is: 'Oh get a grip, Dilys! At the school she makes friends and is nicknamed the Cookie Girl, but she still keeps in touch with Rhona by writing letters. Their mother/daughter relationship is fascinating, actually, because Beauty is brainier than her mother. I don't have my copy anymore (lost many years ago) but I intend to get another copy somewhere if I can find it.
