About this deal

I'm quite surprised to see other reviews mentioning small typeface or other issues with clarity, as to me this looks great, a really attractive book with clear care and attention to layout, font, font size and so on.

as with all horror, I find the reasons why it is seen as scary always so interesting, and with folk horror I think this is so deeply a fear of post-industrial revolution humans, of conquering humans, of hegemonic humans, of consumer humans, that they truly lack control over the world and its functionings and that 'civility' as it has been established is under threat or was even futile in its establishment. They stalk the moors at night, the deep forests, cornered fields and dusky churchyards, the narrow lanes and old ways of these ancient places, drawing upon the haunted landscapes of folk-horror.Rolt (if in the main for a compelling horror rendering of my old neck of the woods) and Bind Your Hair by Robert Aickman, a very modern clash between a young woman's aspirations, her could-be life with her fiancée, and interesting goings-on on a small town's outskirts. It is little wonder then that so many of us retreat into those fears we at least partially recognise, and willingly submit to. So wicked witches, bad fairies, and the restless dead be damned, for those who are looking to fill up their folk horror fiction shelves, Damnable Tales is a must-have. Anthologies don't get much better than this masterful assembly of 23 horror shorts, first published between 1872 and 1964.

Indeed there were a lot of good examples of that in this collection, but there were other themes too. All in all, seeing as I got this on offer for 5 euro I will keep it, but it's not worth any more than that frankly. It is easier to become absorbed and drenched in the delicious dread and atmosphere of a spooky tale if you do not have to repeatedly reach for a dictionary or second-guess what is actually being said.He is one of the ‘talking heads’ on the Severin films' documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror’. Every story is accompanied with its own linocut by Richard Wells add something really special as well.

For example the idea that someone who is unbaptised is in danger from supernatural forces, the fear of the ancient inhabitants of Britain. There was none of that eerie foreboding that you get from communities just outside the modern world going balls deep into some old school religion much to the horror of the modern watchers on. He is also the creator of the Folk Horror Revival and Urban Wyrd Projects and the associated publishing arm Wyrd Harvest Press. R. James, Shirley Jackson and Algernon Blackwood, alongside eerie tales by those less associated with the horror genre, like John Buchan, E. While her contemporaries were cranking out Victoriana Nesbit delivers her tale in a strikingly modern style that reminded me of Bernard Taylor's best.

Unholy rites, witches’ curses, sinister village traditions and ancient horrors that lurk within the landscape all combine to remind us that the shiny modern, urban world might not have all the answers… Wicked witches, bad fairies, and the restless dead be damned, for those who are looking to fill up their folk horror fiction shelves, Damnable Tales is a must-have. It is notable, however, that the majority of stories in this book do have a British or Irish origin, with Shirley Jackson’s 1950 tale ‘The Summer People’ notably bringing an odd slice of Wyrd Americana to the table. The stories included in this anthology are not very famous, even when the authors are well known in the horror and mystery genres.
