Pupae: In favourable (warm) conditions larvae spin cocoons in about 5-20 days of hatching from their eggs. They cause a sharp pain when fleas bite and their salivary glands give off a substance that's irritating to many dogs and cats.

Depending on environmental conditions, these stages can take between two weeks and eight months to complete. Waiting until an infestation has developed can mean it’s more difficult to exterminate, as they can become established very quickly.
