About this deal

We have shared Andrew’s Gogen puzzle on his behalf with his permission, so he is not following this thread. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

The Ultra-Gogen, on the other hand, has fewer given letters although all 25 letters are in the clue words. Since then: I have written a number of time-sliced computer models and used them to optimised special effects for television; Guest-lectured at the University of Derby's BSc Forensic Science and Law Degree courses on biometrics and on computer fraud; I've worked as a journalist in computer security, also writing the HelpDesk pages for PC Plus magazine; and designed Indian fonts that have been used in films, books, posters, newspapers and so on.

There are a number of additional types of puzzle - the Uber-Gogen, the Ultra-Gogen and just when you thought it was all getting a bit difficult, the Hyper-Gogen puzzle. The Gogen puzzle has behind it a deceptively simple concept yet, with so many variants, each with their own characteristics, this a very interesting puzzle to do. I worked in a number of bands as a musician and running some of them, playing anything from pop music through to modern jazz. Removed the remark from the question, as the puzzle is already in the "earning badges" level of points, as it should. Although the puzzles were classed as more difficult than the common newspaper versions I find them if anything easier.

The short of it is that you have a square, twenty five cell board and each cell carries a different letter of the alphabet, from A to Y. As you can see, it's quite heavily aliased, but scaling it down will antialias it for you, so I couldn't be bothered to redo it properly. and even without using the remaining clue (FIR) we know the final empty spot must house the final missing letter, F. I ran my program without it and it refused to run because there was no letter F in the other words so it never got as far as checking for a unique solution. Finally, as an improvement suggestion for the presentation: if you put the clue words to the right of the grid, and the alphabet below it (with the given letters already crossed out), it's much easier to work the puzzle, whether in printed form or in graphics software. Imperial has progressed to the third round of University Challenge, after coasting to victory against Lincoln College, Oxford.

Solving it: going one cell at a time, up down left right diagonally, use the letter clue in the puzzle grid and step through the pseudowords to work out the positions of the remaining letters so that you have the letters a. Extending the HyperGogen is the HyperGogen+ which has within it a nine plus letter word hidden away. The GoldenGogen is like the HyperGogen+ except that now, the clue cells can be right next to each other and the network of letters on the board is designed by hand. This can lead to a more interesting game although it is arguably easier than the HyperGogen+ because there is an element of human design there. to have a large print copy, you can use the extra space in the large print books as more working out space.Additionally, quite often, another letter is omitted as well so when you finish with the clue words, you still have a gap. If I remember correctly I made it as an image on my Google drive and it was not possible to get the lines horizontal and vertical. As you go from puzzle to puzzle, first of all, the centre cell is left empty in the easiest, then another and so on until finally, you are down to just two clue letters, one of which is not in a corner so again, you only need logic to work out all of the letter positions.
