About this deal

Okay, so I may not have read it from cover to cover in a single continuous attempt but I am certain that I have at one time or another, perused each and every page. Gray’s Anatomy, descriptive and surgical was conceived, written, illustrated, and published in three years’ time, appearing in 1858, when Gray was 31.

And it is most definitely of the sort that I will have to read again and again to even get a drop of the knowledge in this textbook. The book’s acclaimed, lavish art programme and clear text has been further enhanced, while major advances in imaging techniques and the new insights they bring are fully captured in state of the art X-ray, CT, MR and ultrasonic images. Keen edited the next two editions, namely: the New American from the Eleventh English Edition (September 1887); and the New American from the Thirteenth English Edition (September 1893). Toward this end, a long-term strategy appears to have been to make each edition come close to containing a fully comprehensive account of the anatomical medical understanding available at the time of publication. Unfortunately, Gray still emerges as a mostly enigmatic person whose life we know about only through the scant writings of those who knew him, none of whom ever wrote a contemporary biography or personal memoir. While still a student, in 1848 he secured the triennial prize of Royal College of Surgeons for an essay entitled “The Origin, Connexions and Distribution of nerves to the human eye and its appendages, illustrated by comparative dissections of the eye in other vertebrate animals”.

Human anatomy has always perplexed and confused me (for whatever reason, animal anatomy makes sense to me when human doesn’t, go figure). Its illustrations are works of art, the labelling beautiful and the text, occasionally grandiose and impenetrable, memorable. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The book has a stunningly designed bonded leather cover, gilt edging to the pages, and colourful patterned endpapers. In the less civilized races, as the forehead recedes backward, the supraorbital arch becomes more prominent, and approaches more to the characters of the monkey tribe. Features conceptual overviews summarizing each body region's component parts, functions, and relationship to other bodily organs.

After more than 160 years of continuous publication, Gray’s Anatomy remains the definitive, comprehensive reference on the subject, offering ready access to the information you need to ensure safe, effective practice. It's been updated and revised many times over the past 160 years, but remains the standard reference work on the subject of human anatomy to this day. Of course the book would mean nothing or at least very little to me, without the bountiful illustrations. The 41st edition also has 24 specially invited online commentaries on contemporary anatomical topics such as advances in electron and fluorescent microscopy; the neurovascular bundles of the prostate; stem cells in regenerative medicine; the anatomy of facial aging; and technical aspects and applications of diagnostic radiology. Now in its fortieth edition (originally published in 1858) it has been the keystone to learning human anatomy by medical students and doctors.Features a new neuroanatomy chapter containing approximately 100 all-new questions that cover key concepts and relate them to clinical practice. I am not finished with it yet, still taking notes on the cardiovascular system but can't wait to read the other body systems. Their meeting most likely occurred in the dissection laboratory where Gray, age 21, was teaching anatomy and working on his first major work in embryology and comparative anatomy.
