About this deal

I thought the artist's exaggerated approach to facial features in the Cyclops/Hope training scene successfully conveyed the dysfunction between the two and signalled just how far gone Cyclops is as a result of a life of hardship and heartache.

The polish of the story may have been tarnished with the sequels and as such, the two co-creators, Millar and Romita JR have taken the wise step of starting over. The colours from Steigerwald are pretty dark and muted in this issue, with the red blood spurts really standing out!The new Kick-Ass abandons nerdy high schooler Dave Lizewski in favor of Patience Lee, a recently discharged military veteran struggling to support her family. I found it pretty unique and loved the scene int he warehouse with Big Daddy taking out all the bads. Everything the writing characters art and development are amazing I did not expect this comic to be good but I was shocked when I found out detailed and great it was.

That is not how this series is presented, however, and there's a distinct lack of self-awareness regarding its love for carnage. Overall the new Kick-Ass is a mixed bag, a fumbled attempt at producing the kind of comic the industry needs with some really nice looking art. After proving himself in the ’90s as a talent to watch while writing for DC Comics and the UK comic 2000AD, his arrival to Marvel came at a time when Ultimate Spider-Man had just shot up the sales charts. This book does feel and look more cinematic than the original Kick Ass, but doesnt seem to have as strong of a start as a comic book itself. With IDW's 30 Days of Night reboot not doing much to distinguish itself from the original, at least Kick Ass 2.

Introducing us to our brand new Kick-Ass and what causes her to go down this path of vigilantism, the creative team form the basis for what could easily become another smash hit. This is a brand new (though familiar) world for Kick-Ass, and hopefully this new take on the universe and a new home at Image comics proves successful for Patience. Rather, the focus here is on character development: Millar is able to make readers fear for her very quickly, which is not a small feat for someone portrayed as such a powerful and capable soldier.

Here, Romita captures that into his art and keeps the flow going even on such vastly different story beats. breath new life in the 'Kick-Ass' universe with a hero for our times - a fierce black woman saving her community while supporting her family and her dreams. For a series like this to work, the art must deliver intense action pieces, but also be able to slow it down in private character moments. Like Doctor Who, Spider-Man, or the Flash, the hope is that Patience takes inspiration from the character of Kick-Ass and what he stood for, and creates another aspect to that legacy by taking on the mantle and continuing the fight for justice.

So grab those super-suits and bully clubs, come along for the ride, and meet the new face behind the Kick-Ass mask. But there's a new face beneath the old mask, a new figure wearing that famous green and yellow spandex.Does the change on scenario, lead and themes drive readers away from “Kick-Ass”, or was it just what was needed to reinvigorate the franchise? Meanwhile, Millar was invited to enter the regular Marvel Universe to take a stab at two of its most iconic characters: Spider-Man and Wolverine.
