The 3 wavy white stripes represent the 3 groups of islands which are: Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands and the 17 rays represent the 16 Kiribati islands and Banaba, which was an ocean island. The Kiribati Flag design is split into two seperate parts, the upper half features a golden frigatebird flying over a gold sun rise with 19 rays, the lower half features three white wavy stripes and three blue wavy stripes with the lower blue stripe being thicker than the rest.
