About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Commissioned for the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, it was chosen for the National Brass Band Championship regionals in the same year (second section). If you go down to the village of Zennor, and take a walk to the church, you’ll find something interesting. As the days pass, she becomes more and more fixated upon him, until her obsession threatens to consume her.

William Bottrell (7 March 1816 – 27 August 1881) was a Cornish folklorist who documented many Cornish tales and wrote articles on Cornish life. The most recognisable is the classic fish tail, but in many areas, such as Western Europe and Africa, mermaids are imagined with the tail of a serpent. Notwithstanding she founded the church in Zennor so to bring Christianity to the local Celtic people, before moving on to Ireland to spread the word of God.The Mermaid of Zennor story centres on St Senara’s Church in the village, which is worth a visit in its own right. Raising her right hand she swore the harbour would be from that day forth desolate, and always will be. Whenever they sang songs in church, she had the most beautiful voice, and everyone else sang quietly so they could hear her better.

Please note that as this story is old-fashioned in its style and narrative, it contains some gender stereotypes that may need to be addressed within the context of the story. There are alternative versions of the story but the overriding consensus is that after miraculously washing up on land she gave birth to her son and then spent her time converting people to Christinity in Ireland and Cornwall. He followed her down to the sea, to Pendour Cove, and there both vanished beneath the waves and never to be seen again. Hence if the villagers of Zennor had instructed a woodworker to carve them a mermaid to commemorate the tale, it is highly likely a mermaid in the classic pose with mirror and comb would have resulted anyway. The present church dates to the 12th century, but it is thought to stand on the site of a cell founded by the 6th century saint, Senara, whose name has been altered over the centuries to become 'Zennor'.

And for all we know, Mathy is still down there on the ocean floor, singing sweetly to his mermaid wife and their children. A story of a human falling in love with a creature of the sea naturally lends itself to music, as mere words sometimes cannot do justice to the magic of the tale. There are two reasons this MPA is not “protected”, which illustrate the hollowness of Gove’s promises overall. The barrel found its way to Ireland and she was rescued by an angel, which tended to happen a lot back then. In many tales, if a human was to obtain this cap or skin, the mermaid would be trapped on land with them for evermore. The famed "mermaid chair" was the same bench on which the mermaid had sat and sung, opposite Trewella in the singing loft. Now, are you going to let me get back to my wife and family, or do you want to become a mermaid, too? The Doom Bar is at it’s most perilous between the tides when it is submerged by just a few feet causing unsuspecting mariners to become stranded or in storms, shipwrecked. Suffice to say, Mathew became otherwise absorbed and one day didn’t arrive for choir practise on time.
