About this deal

Whether you're just getting started or an experienced climber, whatever your adventure needs, we have the gear. We’d bet that you’d see the Leviathan’s unmistakable off-yellow hue emanating from at least a quarter of them. I used this recently on a sub zero trip to Dartmoor and found it extremely warm and not too claustophobic as same bags can be when cinched up. I’m certain you’ll be alright in a standard Rab Ascent length at 6’1”as that’s within their recommendation.

Looks a not unreasonable spec for the money - 600 fill power, but 900gms, whereas a Rab Ascent 700 has a higher fill power (650) but has 700gms.

That OK, and comfort temp of minus 9 seems reasonable, but I do worry about the 'extreme tempreture' cited, which is minus 38! the bag won’t weigh you down on your adventures and comes with a compression stuff sack for space-saving on wild camps and multi-day expeditions, as well as a breathable mesh bag which helps the down relax during longer storage periods at home. I wish that I had not scrimped and just forked out the extra hundred or so for the Rab ascent 900 instead. If you went for a Rab Ascent 900 (or any 4 season bag) for the cold, you’ll hate it in the warmer months and also be lugging around unnecessary weight. The 900gsm / 600 Fill Power duck down in the Leviathan has a fluorocarbon-free hydrophobic coating, which helps it to retain loft when it gets damp, performing better than untreated down.

It’s a number that’s based on the amount the down in the sleeping bag lofts back up after being compressed, with higher-quality down lofting up more than lower-quality down. The outer is also very durable and is reasonably water resistant (as we found out when we spilt a 500 ml pot of cold water over the bag one chilly winter’s night). And a "summer" rating (we had 5 deg overnight in Devon, camping in early September) is nonsense when compared to the "winter" 13 deg it will be tonight in mid November. As mentioned, we bought it back at the end of summer 2020 and have used it innumerable times over the years.

Additionally, the zipper along the side of the bag is strong, thick and easy to open and shut, and when operated from inside the bag it rarely snags. My advice would be to get a Rab Ascent 500 or possibly 300 for spring/summer/autumn and supplement it with a cheap summer bag for winter. Really good quality materials used very soft and comfortable and i really like the design of the bag and the colour of black and lime. This is obviously not an issue in a dark tent, though I do ask myself why the design team at OEX decided to make this the only option – especially for their flagship down bag. When it comes to packing away, the compression stuff sack will save room in your pack until you get home, where you can switch to the breathable mesh sack to help the down decompress to maintain its performance on your next adventure. As down needs to be left uncompressed during storage, the Leviathan EV 900 also comes with a handy storage sack. If you use the provided stuff sack, you can get it down to the size of a watermelon or a standard football, and weighing just over 1. Having slept in this thing in temperatures approaching minus 9 numerous times, we absolutely cannot support this claim.

The compression stuff sack lets you pack it down to a very compact and manageable size for packing and carrying. Hell, just head into the Lake District in mid-January and take a peek into the various tents you spot. As one of our expert campers, Craig revels in testing camping equipment and knows a sturdy shelter from on that will give up the ghost when conditions become challenging. From your local crag to the summit of Everest, at Tiso, you’ll find the climbing and mountaineering equipment you need.In general, then, fill power is a useful marker for understanding how much down you might need to achieve the same insulatory effect. It comes with a handy compression sack, stuffing down to a very compact and manageable size for easy packing. Zip caught inner baffle at bottom on first try, took almost 5 mins to free without causing damage, caught 3 more times trying to open or close.
