About this deal

Forget that 1992 "Director's Cut," which Scott now admits was only marketing and not his approved version. Clarity in the foreground is superb, in the background the image tends to fade into shadow, while dark detail and contrast varies from scene to scene. While the 4K Blu-ray certainly looks much more detailed than its actually rather soft looking HD Blu-ray counterpart, though, this explanation doesn’t feel right. Overall it’s impossible not to be impressed by the work that’s gone into the 4K HDR remaster of Blade Runner. Note: 2K score updated to reflect clarifications to scoring categories since this review was first published.

In my review for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, I opened by discussing the difficulties of discussing a classic piece of cinema. I was hit once more with the ‘sliced bread’ metaphor, and it was only through viewing subsequent purchases that the realisation dawned that those first two DVDs were actually pretty naff. They’re presented as wild animals that need to be put down, yet by getting to know them just a little, you soon want them to survive.

This phenomenal Blade Runner set from Warner on Blu-ray sets the new standard for comprehensive special editions. The film's original domestic cut, with its tacked on narration and happy ending, will surely be a surprise if you've seen the "Final" version first. Whether or not these added features are worth the extra thirty bucks or so for the 'Ultimate Edition' comes down to personal preference. Despite having Harrison Ford in the lead role, his Deckard is subdued and unsympathetic, a cynical character who lives a lonely existence. This long-anticipated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic struggled to connect with viewers . Blu-ray: Castilan Spanish, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, Interactive Menu, Screen ratio 1:1. The Final Cut' is presented on all high-def versions with optional English and French Dolby Digital 5.

Dubbed the "Enhancement Archive," platter four is filled with deleted footage, more featurettes and promotional materials. Blacks were pretty good on the Blu-ray but they’re inky deep on the 4K, and the complexion of characters, especially Ford’s Deckard, has been enhanced, with stronger, better-defined skin tones, without ever appearing over-cooked.with a flowchart of the changes, it's almost impossible to tell which cut of 'Blade Runner' you're even watching anymore. Now, fifteen years after the faux-"Director's Cut," Warner has at last coughed up for Scott's definitive version, giving us the long-awaited 'The Final Cut,' which is essentially the "Director's Cut" with a series of tweaks. You know that director Ridley Scott's overwhelming visuals have been praised as some of the finest images ever burned onto celluloid.
