About this deal

What’s more, she’s keen to help him, to keep him secret from Mr Scarcross and his threats of ‘ the only good Jerry’s a dead Jerry‘. So when Sally tells Tommy about the wounded Nazi airman in the woods Tommy is persuaded not to report it but to help Sally keep him hidden. It’s why Aunt Annie takes little notice of Mr Scarcross’s harsh words about his evacuee friend, Sally Smith. Given that Earle wrote WHEN THE SKY FALLS, one of my favourite wartime stories, as well as the more recently published WHILE THE STORM RAGES, which I also thoroughly enjoyed, my expectations were high.

Some are lucky, others, like Sally, less so; she ends up with farmer Scarcross, an ill-tempered, abusive carer. Ross Welford introduces Time Travelling with a Tortoise, the sequel to Time Travelling with a Hamster, and a whole new time travel adventure! The story centres on two children, one resident farmer, being brought up by three aunts while the men are away fighting, and one evacuee, who turns out to be a runaway. Together the children seek to keep the airman’s whereabouts a secret, which sets off a chain of events that changes their lives. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do.Andersen Press) Although Tommy’s holding in his worries about his missing father, his aunts are aware of his feelings. The crux of the story turns on their discovery of a wounded German airman who has parachuted from his plane and landed in their fields. What’s more, it seems the airman is injured and needs more than Sally’s stolen food and first aid kit.

An interesting and nostalgic look at sheep farmers and countryside history, as well as quite a page turner for this young audience. Cuckoo Summer: This adventure novel, set in World War 2, is about friendship, triumph over adversity and resilience. Into this world his new friend Sally, an evacuee who lives on the neighbouring farm, appears like a breath of fresh air, full of jokes, chat and bravado, she is the type of child that others follow. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! It kept me interested from the first page to the last, and even gave a little emotional kick at the end.So, while it's not the most original in terms of setting or plot (the ending was comfortingly predictable), I adored it.

Her and Tommy's conversations end up extremely one-sided, where she doesn't listen to him or brushes off his valid concerns with the same energy of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. Ideal class read for y5/6/7 to compliment or introduce a study of WWII but any keen young reader will enjoy this story. In fact the whole novel is seeped in local accents and Tulloch's ease with dialogue is a strong part of the book's appeal.

This results in a chain of events that expose the children to danger and uncover secrets about Sally’s past.I grew fond of some of the characters and think that Silent Simon who works on the Scarcross farm deserves a story of his own. It seems Mr Scarcross has little time for his evacuee, and nor does Miss Gently or others in the community. The descriptions of the setting, the tarns and the wildflowers all bring the world to life as the reader is drawn into the adventure. Tommy and his evacuee friend Sally find an injured German airman close to their home in the Lake District. In the opening sentences, the two children come across a German airman who has parachuted from his plane, which has been shot down.
