As much as I like the character and his extremely Star Wars-y name I do get the feeling that Zahn favours his own smuggler character over Han and Lando and therefore gives him a lot of page-time, sometimes to the story’s detriment. The north-flank AT-AT and its support vehicles were lagging noticeably behind the rest of the armored noose. All the pair ever seem to do in these novels is worry about things; Leia about the success or failure of her political endeavours, and Han about the well-being of Leia. Meanwhile, Leia Organa Solo continues to investigate the Noghri, a strange alien race that has been attempting to capture her and her unborn twins. Thrawn just owns close to any Star Wars antagonist, because the has the calm, sociopathic mind of a master strategist and the reader is extremely motivated to continue to see what will happen next, how his plans might fail, if he has a hidden joker in the backhand, how he immediately reacts in even the most difficult situations, and in general any scene including him.
As good as this is, though, it's a painful reminder of how Disney committed an epic fail by relegating these books to "legends" status instead of making films out of them.
I have to be honest, coming off Heir to the Empire I was a little too excited to get through this second novel when in actual fact I was in it for the long run.
But now that I have been introduced to Thrawn and know how awesome he is, so the novelty of this has worn off.Timothy Zahn attended Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1973. Don't get me wrong, Dark Force Rising does a lot of things right, and I am still pretty excited to read The Last Command. Her impressions of Luke in the present do not mix well with her ingrained hatred of him, making for some really interesting interactions. Behind him and to his right, Grand Admiral Thrawn was seated at his command station, his blue-skinned face expressionless, his glowing red eyes focused on the bank of status readouts wrapped around his chair. Twi'Lek females are always sex slaves, and Jawas are scavengers that apparently can be found off their homeworld of Tatooine (weird, eh? The Grand Admiral was right about one thing, at least: his troops were going to need a lot more battle seasoning before they would be up to real Imperial standards.While it had good intentions I think the execution was really lacking and afterwards I just could not understand why people considered it to be so good. Yet most dangerous of all is a new Dark Jedi, risen from the ashes of a shrouded past, consumed by bitterness…and scheming to corrupt Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side. Again, it's another case of it's not that Thrawn is any worse here, it's just because it's the same Thrawn we got in Heir and I wanted Zahn to up the ante. But I must say that an enemy like this is much better than the classic villain, who always gives less play.
