As with the other books in the series, this one provides a brief history of the tea treat and explains how it would have been made and when and why.It was very nice, the decoration very sumptuous but I couldn’t help but feel they had crammed a few too many tables into the area, but the tea and different plates were of course wonderful. You need to book a table months before if you intend to go at a weekend, otherwise you can phone them during the week asking if someone has canceled…which worked for us. This carefully curated selection of 70 recipes guides you through the world of Downton, from afternoon tea in the drawing-room to glamorous garden parties. Although we were Downton fans and live quite near the castle, it was our American friends who dragged us along for a visit. Proper placement of spoon — the spoon always goes behind cup, also don’t leave the spoon in the cup. The three recipes I am sharing are: Cucumber Sandwiches and other Sandwiches, a classic Victoria Sandwich and a recipe for Scones.

This charming cookbook also features a detailed narrative history and extols the proper decorum for teatime service, from tea gowns and tearooms to preparing and serving tea. The book then turns to 70 recipes for delicious bakes, bites and assorted sweet and savoury delights to accompany a delightful afternoon tea, with sections on: Pastries, buns and biscuits -A? This classic traditional British tea with bergamot orange oil has been paired with exotic vanilla for an intriguing finish.

With lunch at noon and dinner at eight, the afternoon tea proved the perfect answer to snacking politely before mealtime, and small, delicate finger sandwiches played a big role in quelling late-afternoon hunger. My best friend Sarah and I decided that only our poshest togs would do and we went just a little over the top with the dressing up – I wore a full length green satin evening gown with long black gloves, hair up and lots of diamante jewellery.
