Nose: A rich waft of burnt tyres and engine oil reach out of the glass and grab your attention, as if joy riders left a burning car by the side of the road. I appreciate peat whisky isn’t for everyone but peat whisky lovers who haven’t tried Ledaig 10 don’t know what delight they’re missing out on. Ledaig's full-on character is a combination of very boisterous wet, earthy peat alongside coastal salinity balanced by a toffee sweetness, but it also frequently has unique layers of rubber, sweet and peppery spices and barbecued meat.

Early the following year, following several further months of unusually dry weather, there was another temporary halt to production. Originally hailing from Ireland and enjoying the available Irish whiskeys, Hamish was drawn into the world of Scotch malt and further afield while he fell into the flavour chase rabbit-hole.Like many Scottish distilleries, Ledaig’s history is also one of mothballing and reopening, falling into some trouble in 1837 and closing completely for 41 years. This first expression has been finished in hand selected Rioja casks in honour of the Spanish treasure buried deep off our shoreline. Palate: Thick peat engulfs your tongue, overriding your sensory system and seemingly staining your mouth. Prior to Burn Stewart’s involvement, the distillery had gone through periods of producing both peated and unpeated whiskies. Our boxes are made of 100% recyclable cardboard and our protective honeycomb paper wrap keeps your package safe and significantly reduces our need for plastic.

We carefully select every single cask, and bottle at cask strength, always keeping the liquid its natural colour and with no chill filtration.

Overlooking the sleepy fishing harbour on the Isle of Mull, Tobermory Distillery produces both an unpeated and a heavily peated spirit with the latter being bottled under the distillery’s original name, Ledaig (pronounced lay-chack). Provenance single cask single malts from Douglas Laing offer a taste of the hugely varied work of Scotland's whisky regions. This 12 year old Ledaig Distillery Exclusive release was finished in Amarone wine casks for one year, creating a sweet but smoky dram with sweet vanilla custard and honey notes balanced with sharp tannins and a distinct saline note intertwined with a peppery smoke. Now they may enjoy a break as he uses the written word to bring that enthusiasm onto a wider audience.
