It's a brave move and the lowish budget doesn't quite pull it off and this would be my main criticism. Sarah is given a copy of "The Three Mothers" to read, and from this (and from following a group of witches) Sarah finds Mater Lachrymarum's lair; a now run-down and disrepaired mansion. Sadness, quietude and revulsion are completely out of her grasp, and though she at least convinces in projecting fear, the movie itself has no such luck.

This is a must own for any fan of Italian horror and proves that Argento can stay cool and up with the times, while creating something brilliant! This is not a dire disappointment, as "The Wicker Tree" is to "The Wicker Man", but is just a different approach, with a lesser budget, from poor Dario who has deviated from what the fans expect. Although I’d read extremely mixed reviews, I was curious about this third film and eventually decided to take a look at it. Dario and his team have obviously enjoyed working on "Mother of Tears" and you can tell because, here and there, you can see extra little loving but unneccessary touches, even to the wealth of infernal artwork shown in the closing credits. The Cannes Film Festival requested that The Third Mother be ready in time for consideration as a 2007 competition contender. And, yes, this death metal-like character is carrying out a gruesome “ Because it’s edgy, that’s why!

However, the gore is deliciously over-the-top from the beginning, including images of flesh-tearing torture, smashing heads (repeatedly and to gut-oozing malformation), BDSM, blood-spewing gashes, dismemberment, eye-gauging, disembowelment, gushy cannibalism, wading through a pit of partially liquefied human offal and being strangled by one's own intestines. As long as you don’t expect it to be “high art” and are familiar with more Dario Argento films than just “Suspiria”, then you’ll probably enjoy this one.
