My Castle First Panic may only have a shelf life of a couple of years before they move on to more complex or fulfilling games but as a starting point it is great and reflecting upon my opening to this review, it is such a huge step up from the first board games I played. I wish that it was a double-sided board with a slightly longer track for when The Daughter gets a little older. I do still get the chance to join in our monthly community board gaming sessions, and that’s been great.Rolling a dice, and moving a number of spaces with zero skill and being fully at the whims of the luck of a dice, where being about to win could turn into being last just because you rolled the wrong number and that kind of game can easily cause a feeling that board games are something that are just based on pure luck. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this as an entry point into playing games with your kids if they are young enough. We’ve even gotten out our old Hero Quest goblin and troll figurines to spice up the display and get into the fantasy theme even more. Others can jump to the front of the line, quickly causing some panic as they might be unexpectedly near your castle wall. The repeating shape icons give players multiple opportunities to knock off monsters, making it easier to stay afloat.

Roll a dice, move the number of squares and move onto the next player etc etc this one has a bit more to it. Players trade cards, hit and slay monsters, and plan strategies together to keep their castle towers intact. In My First Castle Panic, a group of monsters is racing out of the woods and coming right at your Castle!It’s also cooperative, so when another player “asks for help” (uses a card from your hand) to stop a goblin, it’s no big deal. The cards are larger than the base game and nicely designed to show the color and shape as well as having a hero on it. My daughter promptly told me that no, we need to capture the monster closest to the castle and that I was going to do that. I can’t help but remark on the fact that the goblins in My First Castle Panic are definitely teaching our daughter some useful skills.
