It's not an easy novel, because it has been written for those who want to immerse themselves in a complex and intricate story (I'm sure that it will please quality-oriented readers who appreciate intricate storytelling).

The only storyline that even remotely matters is Alef’s and even then it doesn’t need to be this long. Martin Compston promises he doesn't die in 'first 10 minutes' of The Rig after that giant rug pull in BBC thriller Vigil". I just instantly felt like these are my people in a way - coz I'm Canadian and we are very different from Americans - there is really this connection, I feel, with UK actors and Scottish actors and people that we can make fun of ourselves. Against this background, two very different boys meet on the sole remaining 'religious' planet, Gehenna, a place of harshly fundamentalist beliefs.It becomes evident which side of the fence each of the crew are on from the very early on, with this then guiding later discussions. Rose would clearly like to sacrifice as many workers as it takes to meet the quarterly production targets (all Companies are heartless, of course, but oil companies do beat all) but Magnus is played by Iain Glen so he wins. I especially love the cover of The Rig, not just because it’s a thing of beauty and perfectly fits the story, but because I think I can see the colours. However, based on the current trajectory, it would appear that the whole thing has been stretched a bit too far. Rest all, including Puranas and Mythologies of Mahabharata, Ramayana and Geeta are Manuvadi Brahminic caste-ist Filth.

This is extremely frustrating, because Pellonhorc becomes more evil as the story goes on, so it's hard to understand why Pireve would even like him.

After examining the spores, a scientist onboard the oil rig suspects that an ancient parasite has been unleashed from the ocean floor. He's obsessed with Crystal-X, a blue drug-like substance that gives superpowers to those exposed to it.

One of the other great things about setting it on an oil rig is if you don’t like somebody, you’re going to see them a lot. The claustrophobic and isolated settings of oil rigs have provided dramatic backdrops for several thrillers over the years. Set somewhere off of the remote Scottish coastline, both the rig and the crew are always isolated and exposed to the elements, and that's before we even factor in the Ancestor. He is neatly set up to become the main villain after the showdown between his father and an enemy crime lord, which Pellonhorc carefully engineers so that he gets the upper hand over both of them.However, just from a story point of view, the enormous size of both the rig itself and of the cast does mean that some of the in-fighting and tension gets lost. Martin says: "On an oil rig, to an extent, there are two worlds – there’s the management, but they’re in the dry and the warm, and then there’s the guys outside, covered in oil and getting their hands dirty, so there’s a lot of tension. While the perspective could completely change to focus on those on the mainland, the thread of the Kinloch needs to follow through to make any potential storylines convincing. The reader gets a solid sense of how his life on Gehenna affected him from the very first scene (which is shocking and terrifying), and how he struggles between the pull of science and religion.
