About this deal

It is my impression that Viltrox has put in an effort to make the adapter work with lenses with built in AF motors (AF-S and G), including image stabilization and obviously EXIF information. I have been shooting with the 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens extensively, and it works like a charm. I have also used it with my wide 16-35mm f/4 G ED and although I felt the AF was a tad slower than with the Nikon adapter, it also worked really well (speed of AF with a wide lens is not critical to me). The Viltrox NF-Z mount adapter. Notice both the USB-C plug bottom left on the adapter and also the button next to it, reserved for future appliances.

sandy b: There was no "gushing over" Sony, there was only a post stating a technical fact as proof of feasibility in reply to another post stating doubts about that. Calling this "gushing over" is the first statement in this thread that's actively trying to make a brand war out of what simply had been a civilised discussion of technical details in adapting different kinds of lenses. The secret weapon of the Nikon Z system is the mount. It is both the largest mount for any full-frame camera system and the one which is positioned closest to the sensor (shortest flange distance). This allows Nikon’s optical engineers unprecedented flexibility when designing lenses. There are no electronic manual focus aids other than Focus Peaking and Magnifiers. The selected focus area always stays red and there are no arrows or dots at the bottom of the finder. Note that some of the “fully compatible” lenses may still require a firmware update before they work with the FTZ adapter without any issues. If you buy any of these lenses new, Tamron has likely already installed the most recent firmware, but if you’ve had the lens for years, you might need to send it off for an update (or use Tamron’s tap-in console). NIKON Z7 + TamronSP 90mm F/2.8 MACRO VC (Model F017) @ 90mm, ISO 160, 1/1000, f/6.3, manual focus due to partial incompatibility Tokina Brand LensesDistortion corrections aren't always complete and some distortion may be left even with distortion correction turned on, for instance with the 28-300mm VR. An optimal lens for stills and videos that covers up to telephoto 120mm focal length while attaining high optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.

When you consider the fact that carrying an FTZ adapter minimizes some of the Z6 II’s weight advantage over a DSLR (or negates it completely compared to the Nikon D780), you can see why we at Photography Life prefer using native lenses whenever possible. However, one good point about the FTZ adapter is that it has very tight tolerances, and our tests showF-mount lenses don’t lose sharpness when using them on a Z-system camera.Multi-focusing system that utilizes two STMs (stepping motors), enabling fast, precise and quiet AF operation for both stills and videos. Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory. Nikon really needs to fill in the blank spots here. The 24-200mm f/4-6.3 is the only lightweight Z-series telephoto zoom, and many photographers are averse to superzooms and wouldn’t want one in the first place. There are no lenses longer than 200mm at the moment, whether primes or zooms, unless you use the 1.4× or 2.0× teleconverter on the 70-200mm f/2.8. When Nikon does eventually release some longer lenses, they’ll need to fill out a line of both lightweight telephotos (like the 300mm f/4 and 500mm f/5.6 PF lenses) as well as large aperture pro lenses (like a 400mm f/2.8) if they want to remain competitive with Canon and Sony mirrorless. Nikon got cheap and didn't include an aperture-ring feeler in the FTZ as in every FX DSLR, so it can't read the actual set aperture and doesn't read it in the finder, and cannot control the aperture from the camera for Program or Shutter-priority auto exposure. You could do all this — and get better Matrix metering — in 1984's Nikon FA than with this FTZ.
