Headup" is a different take as it primarily expresses a positive message in regards to achieving one’s goals. but it was with 'around the fur' that the band earned the attention of a far larger audience as it topped the billboard heatseekers chart, helped in part by two of the band's most famous moments 'my own summer (shove it)' and 'be quiet and drive (far away)'. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to "Headup," while "MX" finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality.

When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression. When Consequence of Sound ranked the eight albums Deftones had released as of May 2020, Around the Fur was placed at number four. My Own Summer (Shove It)" appeared on The Matrix: Music from the Motion Picture, released on March 30, 1999.

The album was praised for its loud-soft dynamics, the flow of the tracks, Moreno's unusual vocals, and the strong rhythm section grooves created by Cunningham and bassist Chi Cheng. On CD and digital editions of the album, it's followed by two hidden tracks, separated between 27 minutes and 21 seconds of silence; "Bong Hit" and "Damone". Around the Fur went on to reach RIAA gold status on June 24, 1999, and platinum status on June 7, 2011. Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment.

Around the Fur sold 43,000 copies in its first week of release, and entered the Billboard 200 at No. The album closer "MX" reflects a dark, sexual relationship in which the protagonist is debating between either loving or murdering his girlfriend. The album cover was shot by photographer Rick Kosick during a late-night party in Seattle where the band was recording. But the jacket is so thin and flimsy, and could’ve been the reason why mine came warped in the mail brand new.

In a retrospective review, AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote: "Deftones tap into the same alternative metal vibe as Korn and L7, and while they don't have catchy riffs or a fully developed sound, Around the Fur suggests they're about to come into their own". Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene.
