Heath Robinson's drawings look at our daily problems and invent some sort of device to overcome that difficulty -- be it mowing the lawn or making a cup of tea. In fact, the parallels between Aardman's "cracking contraptions" and Heath Robinson's are, on occasions, startling. This was accompanied by a plate showing an illustration typical of his work and five other plates showing the work at five earlier stages of its production, from the first rough to the just before the finished drawing or colour sketch. The eponymous hero is tasked with looking after his nephew Peter, who is one day whisked away by a large bird.

Heath Robinson is best known as the creator of weird mechanical devices and strange gadgets, usually held together with knotted string.The machines he drew were frequently powered by steam boilers or kettles, heated by candles or a spirit lamp and usually kept running by balding, bespectacled men in overalls. In his introduction to The Art of Rube Goldberg by Rube's granddaughter Jennifer George, Adam Gopnik argues that Goldberg is the more credible of the two.
