I thought it was going to be too shallow and ridiculous to make for a truly enjoyable read.Finlay Donovan Is Killing It had a few moments that could have been better, but also many more that were just brilliant. It was so original, unlike anything I’ve ever read before, which on its own made it an exciting read for me. Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a fun read, with lots of snarky banter and a fast-moving plot full of twists and turns. Recommended. As a start to a series, it succeeded in making me fall in love with the characters. I cannot wait for more! I love mysteries!!! This was a refreshing take on a plot for a mystery book!! It wasn’t too dark or suspenseful. I really enjoyed the playful and comedic approach/flavor to a mystery book. I had a hard time putting it down!! It was like Bridget Jones meets Girl on a Train!!

Finlay meets with her agent, who insists she needs to turn in a draft or she’ll lose her advance. Finlay is trying to explain that she’s struggling to figure out how to kill someone off (in her book), and a woman called Patricia overhears and slips her a note. Finlay meets her agent at the Panera where she has been banned, but all is well because she's wearing a scarf wig and huge sunglasses. As she discusses the plot of her next book with her agent, a customer overhears Finlay talking and thinks that Finlay is a hired killer. The customer has a job for Finlay and won't take no for an answer. Being the lousy decision maker that she is, Finlay proceeds to dig herself in a deeper hole as she tries to get herself out of this job. But the job pays so well and she already has the huge advance. One bad decision leads to another and Finlay is in way over her head, only to be rescued/enabled in doing more bad deeds, by her nanny, Vero. Seemingly innocent decisions that end up having serious consequences. Tiny slips that suddenly pull the ground from under her feet. And, let’s face it – a bunch of things she could have guessed wouldn’t end well from the start. This book puts the F in fun! It is such an original plot that is was so refreshing to read. It was a part thriller, mystery with a side of twisted humor- all wins in my book! Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a comic novel with romantic suspense elements. I totally enjoyed this zany story, which delighted and surprised me from beginning to end. It looks like this will be the start of a series, and I couldn't be more excited. With that little bombshell of an ending, I can only hope our wait for the next book isn't too tortuously long. Irena gives Finlay a note from Patricia about a potential new case. Suddenly, plotting murder didn’t seem so hard. At the very least, it seemed easier than figuring out how not to murder someone in real life. He grumbled to himself as I knelt to sop up the puddle of grounds on the floor. I could picture him at their spotless kitchen table in her immaculate designer town house over a mug of French-pressed coffee, pulling out what was left of his hair. Finlay is a writer but since her divorce, she has not been able to write a word. She already used the advance she was given. If she doesn't deliver a new book, her suspense writing dream is over and she will lose her kids for sure.

My relationship with Panera was complicated. I liked their soup. Panera didn’t like that I’d poured it over another customer’s head. I was also anxious about Finlay getting over her head. The one saving grace was Vero. I want a Vero in my life. She was the perfect babysitter and friend anyone should have. Finlay Donovan is going through a rough time. Her ex-husband cheated, got engaged to their realtor and now it’s trying to take custody of their two kids. Finlay's financial situation is dire. She can’t pay her bills! What would it hurt for Finlay to begin researching the target? Surely this person can't be all bad. It'll be just like doing research for her novels, right? Yay! Maybe she can use it for her newest novel. Struggling to make ends meet on her own, Finlay becomes intrigued by the offer. But, when she meets the woman’s husband in real life, she becomes entangled in a murder mystery that’s bigger than she ever expected. I disconnected. It wasn’t as satisfying as a knee to his groin, and yes, it was probably childish and clichéd, but a small part of me felt better after hanging up on him. The very small part (if there was any) that wasn’t covered in syrup and late for my meeting.Of note, I read a print copy of the first book and listened to the audiobooks for the remainder of the series, and I honestly enjoyed both formats. I think you can easily choose either and have a great reading experience. Finlay Donovan is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. If you are looking for serious characters, a well-developed plot, with lots of twists and turns, then you might not like the comedic style of this novel. Elle Cosimano is best known as a Young Adult author. While this is adult fiction, the humor will not be for everyone. My agent was already on a train from Grand Central to Union Station, where I was supposed to meet her for a brunch reservation at a restaurant I couldn’t afford so we could discuss exactly how overdue I was on my deadline for a book I had started three times and probably would never finish because … Jesus, look around me. Reasons. This is a hilarious, fun read with a bounty of laugh-out-loud moments, all the while cheering Finlay on while watching as she digs herself deeper into mischief.
