About this deal

The brilliant Norah Gaughan was inspired by Japanese style to create this wrapped cardigan for Berroco. The recommended yarn is my current favorite Berroco Modern Cotton which has lovely drape and stitch definition and is so comfortable. Experience: Easy+ level. Students need to know to knit and purl, cast-on and bind-off, and have experience making 2-3 projects. There are only three possible knitting methods -- Eastern, Western, and combination. Most knitters knit in the Western method, although Eastern is also very common. Combination knitting utilizes the benefits of both styles in one piece of fabric to make complicated stitches much easier to knit. Combination knitting is popular because you can easily switch between knitting and purling without moving the yarn from one side of the needles to the other. Knitting needle sizes can be confusing. That’s because different countries have different ways of numbering their knitting needles.

Yes, and this is very kind and easy to understand diagram compared to other ones I’ve seen in Japanese knitting patterns! Raglan sweaters are named after FitzRoy Somerset, Lord Raglan, the British commander-in-chief during the Crimean War. Raglan lost his right arm at the Battle of Waterloo, and it is believed that his tailor developed the raglan sleeve style to fit better on his armless side. Comfortable: Raglan sweaters are typically made from soft, comfortable materials, such as cotton, wool, or acrylic. We will go over topics as diverse as: Bavarian twisted-traveling stitches, Irish cables from the Aran Islands, two-color knitting from Norway, Danish texture patterns, Japanese bobbles, Ukrainian lace, Estonian nupps, Andean popcorn stitch, Lithuanian two-color braids, Latvian fringe cast-on, and Swedish twined knitting. Raglan sweaters are a popular choice for both men and women. They are comfortable and stylish, and they can be dressed up or down. Raglan sweaters are also a good choice for activewear, as they allow for free movement.

We will also learn how to chart lace and texture patterns to make them easier to work with. We will go over the basics of charting using graph paper and pencil, and we will also learn about a variety of charting fonts, spreadsheet tools, and software programs for Mac and Windows.Experience: Intermediate. Knitters should have basic knitting skills plus experience with knitting lace and reading charts. There are detailed explanations of chart symbols and general principles, with photo-tutorials for particularly complex stitches, so everything should be doable. That said, this is not a book for beginners. (And as I discovered to my cost, it’s not a book for inebriated knitting at pub yarn-night, either).

One of the magical things about knitting and crochet is the way that traditions vary a little from country to country, so you’ll probably never run out of interesting things to discover. Brainstorming and idea generation: Writing coaches can assist clients in generating ideas, organizing thoughts, and developing outlines for their writing projects. Knit in pieces and seamed, the Kimono Wrap pattern features set-in, belled sleeves, turned hems, a wraparound collar, and a linen stitch sash. SIZES Women’s XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL) Everyone: crochet hook same size as needles or close, basic knitting toolkit, needle nose pliers (optional)Let’s talk about Japan. I confess that until recently, my awareness of Japanese yarn-related traditions extended not much further than amigurumi. I’m not proud of that fact. But then Tuttle Press sent me a review copy of Hitomi Shida’s new book, Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible (translated into English by Gayle Roehm), and… well here’s the briefest book review ever: wow. Materials: 2 balls of worsted-weight yarn in different colors (approx 100 yards each), set of 5 appropriately sized double- pointed needles (or 2 circulars or 1 long circular for magic loop), a crochet hook of the same size, basic knitting toolkit

Karen: First, can I ask you: The Japanese seem especially smitten with Cowichan-style sweaters, which hail from Canada — specifically the Vancouver area. Is it similar or related to the fascination with American sportswear (which I think you do better than we do), or is there something in particular that makes the Cowichan style so appealing in Japan? It was while looking for sweater patterns on Ravelry that Japan once again crept into my mind. I found myself being drawn to patterns with some element of interesting shaping, be it a puffy sleeve or boxy waist. Many of the designers were Japanese. I then tweaked my Ravelry search to only include knitwear designers in Japan(oh Ravelry, your search options are endless!), and the result below is a selection of some of the favorite patterns I came across. Whether it is drape, pleats, boxiness, puffed out sleeves, or cropped tops with textured cables, each of these patterns feature some element that I find inspiring and atypical from the usual patterns I come across.Description: Beads add a fabulous touch! Knowing just the basics of knitting, you can easily create colorful designs with beads. Using only garter stitch and learning how to read and work from beading charts, in this workshop, we will make beautiful jeweled wrist warmer cuffs that are inspired by those popular in Lithuania. We will also learn beautiful crochet trim stitches – with and without beads, for trimming the wrist warmers. It should be noted that there's a difference between knitting styles and knitting methods. Knitting style is a synonym for a knitting hold -- the way you hold your needles and yarn. Knitting method, on the other hand, has to do with the way you form the stitches themselves.
