We are a Leap Frog family, owning many of their products – so I was excited to get our hands on the new LeapPad 3. No, the weight of the LeapPad3 is 385 g which is around the same as a Kindle HD Fire Kids tablet, which weighs 360g with its kid-proof case.

The LeapPad doesn’t give a percentage charge figure like an iPad or smartphone does, so it’s tricky to say exactly how long it takes but I found it was fully charged within an hour of plugging it in. While my toddler has been pretty respectful of her new toy, she has knocked it onto the floor a few times. I loved playing the games almost as much as my toddler, as you get praised constantly when you complete a task! The Leappad 3 comes with a mains adapter for charging but we don't use it - I tend to charge it via USB from my computer while I am synching it with the Leapfrog Connect software (so that I can upload new games, take a look at Lara's learning journey and have a sneaky peak at the photos she has taken! It is chunky so it certainly doesn’t feel light – but my three-year-old was perfectly comfortable holding it.Once installed you can connect the used LeapPad to your computer and the connect software should see it.

I don't know the tech spec but I do know that the speed at which apps loaded and screens transitioned was instantly noticeable compared to previous Leappad incarnations. This is very cool and allows children to chat via the app, if they both have a LeapPad with wifi connection and are in the same room.The game encouraged him to use problem-solving skills to help Doc treat toy patients and learn health lessons. For my son, the best pre-loaded app was without doubt the Pet Pad Party – which allows children to create their own cute monkey, dog, cat, penguin, unicorn or other pet, give it a name, colour and play a series of games with their new pal. Older LeapPads needed four AA batteries but the LeapPad 3 comes with a built-in lithium ion battery, along with a USB cable and charger which I found convenient. All additional games and other content are sold separately and may not be available in all countries. It’s actually been great for helping my 6 year old with her reading, as there are lots of different messages you can send. In the past, we have tried the Leappad Ultra (this year replaced by the Ultra XDi) and also the closest competitor, the Innotab in its various forms so it was a very interesting comparison.As far as I was concerned, the LeapPad3 was a fantastic all-round entertainment tool which has some educational value. I’m rather attached to my tablet so won’t be handing it over to my kids to use and abuse it any time soon. The Photo Fun app is very entertaining for Jake who spent a good half hour making pictures with funny masks and experimenting with the cool effects. Once you’ve drawn a picture, you can save it and then access it from your image gallery on the LeapPad3 home screen, and you can easily import them to your computer when you connect your LeapPad3. Through the parental conrols, I can access the Wifi and add/replace and delete apps to her device without even having to connect it to my PC via a USB.

Once you choose the user, which can be personalised, the home screen pops up with a choice of apps and games. Furthermore, once you have created your new parent lock code when setting up the unit again, you can reset the 4-digit code anytime by accessing the Parent Settings screen of the tablet.Once in the Parent Settings screen, you can reset the code by tapping "Device", then Parent Lock Code. My girls love naming their pet, playing games to wash and feed him, decorating his home and giving him toys to play with. I bought this leap pad months ago for my son for Christmas I only turned it on yesterday for him and it turned off within 5 minutes and has not worked since! The paper instructions with the LeapPad3 are quite minimal and include one diagram of the tablet’s various buttons and slots, and a few paragraphs on settings. On the "My Stuff" screen, tap the Videos tab at the top of the screen, tap the trash can, highlight the videos you wish to delete, then tap the check mark to confirm.
