Trying the different sound modes was fun, and really allowed for a lot in the way of customization. When it came to the Virtual DTS:X surround sound mode, it actually gave a convincing enough effect to where I preferred leaving it on. Whether you want a soundbar as part of a wider audio setup or you just want to add a bit more energy to films, both LG and Samsung promise to enhance your favourite movies, TV and music with powerful, room-filling sound. In terms of what you get in the box, there’s a remote control, optical cable, a warranty card, 2 triple A batteries for the remote, and the subwoofer and soundbar themselves.It proved a solid three-star soundbar when we considered the sound quality for bass softness and dynamic expression, but its attractive build and Dolby Atmos support remains a good advert for the format.

The AI sound pro feature that automatically optimizes your content depending on what you watch I actually found to work really well. It did tend to slightly emphasize voices in a few rare instances, but it worked just fine other than that. The LG SN5Y continues to be an excellent low cost offering that is ideal for casual users looking for a system that will upgrade their TVs audio without spending too much money or having to deal with complex settings and features. Either you love watching movies, playing games or listening to music this soundbar will cover you for sure. It’s interesting too because subwoofers that are included with soundbars don’t typically perform at this level, so it’s definitely a stand out in my opinion.I wouldn’t personally say it’s a complete replacement for dedicated ceiling speakers, but it’s certainly compelling enough to use. High-resolution audio can make a big difference in the quality of the experience, and the higher the sampling rate & bit depth, the better the perceived quality overall. But to be fair, the focus should be on the sound so it doesn’t necessarily need to. That said, I still think it looks good. I’ve actually talked about DTS Virtual:X before, but it’s basically a way of simulating surround sound without the need for actual surrounding speakers placed around you.

Samsung and LG's more expensive soundbars support Dolby Atmos, meaning they have upward-firing speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling to create a similar effect to having ceiling speakers. This should create a great sense of space, making you feel immersed in the action when watching a movie. However, we’ve found that very few soundbars manage to do this well. While there wasn’t a notated frequency for the subwoofer, I found it that it actually went surprisingly deep, at least to my ears, and definitely had some good impact when it came to the bass.However, if your TV doesn’t have ARC support, then you’ll have to use an optical cable to get any output. LG soundbars are generally very well-built, even their more affordable models. Some companies cover their soundbars with a dark fabric that tends to collect dust, making the bar look dirty. Fortunately, the LG soundbars we've tested all have a more premium design, with a brushed metal or textured plastic finish that looks and feels more high-end. What it does, it does extremely well, and if you don’t mind the slight quibbles that I mentioned earlier (I personally don’t), then it really is a great system that’ll blow you away when you first turn it on. In this second inset we get a HDMI input, a HDMI output that has added ARC support as well as a USB port that you can use to connect external storage and stream audio from there.
