It goes into a fair amount of detail where available and has some really good general information on crime. The preface notes that the case histories are examples of specific serial killer types, motivations, nationalities, and other characteristics, because the more than 1,500 serial killers on record renders comprehensive coverage of every case unfeasible.

The author manages to cover a brief history of each killer, and the reader begins to notice patterns in some of the cases - such as a traumatic or abusive childhood. Ranging from ancient Rome to the present, he discusses the realities versus popular film and television myths, key figures on both sides of the law, pivotal cases and events, and criminal activities that have shaped law enforcement responses.
