About this deal

It’s the granddaddy of all milk savers as far as capacity goes as it can store up to nearly 2 oz’s worth of breast milk at a time. Meanwhile, a milk collection shell’s purpose, as mentioned at the very start of this, is to drain off excess milk and help prevent any public embarrassment or the staining of your favorite dress shirts. Sore nipples are the most common breastfeeding complication and the most common reason women give up breastfeeding (NHS, 2019a). With a little breastfeeding support this can often easily be rectified. What causes sore nipples when breastfeeding? Unfavorable breast condition was significantly associated with the onset of pain ( p< 0.001) and nipple injury ( p = 0.006), as this condition suggests difficulties with proper breastfeeding technique. This increased frequency (76.0%) is associated with nipple injury and breast engorgement during breastfeeding assessment and similar results have been documented [ 31].

It is recommended not to wear breast shells for longer than 40 minutes. Wearing them for an extended period may put too much pressure on milk ducts, which can be uncomfortable or potentially problematic. 4. Do breast shells help engorgement? The research team was composed of nurses with experience in breastfeeding. The team was trained by the main researcher to standardize data collection. The data collection steps were randomly performed by the research team to avoid bias, thus, the researcher who recruited the participants offered health education and guidelines on the use of the shell, however, the clinical observation, data tabulation and analysis of the results of this participant was performed by other researchers on the research team. I sincerely hope it’s helped you choose your ideal shell and that any problems you may have with breastfeeding due to the way your nipples are shaped will be reduced. Pathological breast engorgement began on the third day (3.1 ± 1.5) in the CG and on the fifth day (4.9 ± 3.1) in the EG, with a significant difference between groups (p 0.01; Mann–Whitney test).

They’re the modern iteration of old-fashioned breast pads and a direct upgrade, easily replacing them and getting rid of one extra item off your already hefty baby gear shopping list.

I found that they were ideal to use during nursing sessions, where I’d cover one breast with the Milkies Milk-Saver while the other was used to breastfeed my baby, leaving a solid surplus of milk to use later that would’ve normally been lost on a nursing pad. If both nipples are deeply inverted, you can pump both breasts simultaneously for 15-20 minutes 8 or more times in 24 hours. You can feed your baby with an alternative feeding device until she is able to latch on effectively and comfortably. Of course, in life, for every good thing, there are often a few downsides. In the case of nipple shields, there’s always a chance that your baby will become attached — no pun intended — to the shield. This can happen if you start off breastfeeding with a shield and your baby gets used to the feel and texture. When it comes to breast shells for expressing breastmilk, one size does certainly not fit all. At Ardo, we cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure the correct size breast shell is used to ensure the most productive milk flow. A systematic review evaluated the most used covers for the prevention of nipple injury, reporting positive results with the use of water or mint gel and guaiazulene (high or moderate recommendation). The authors reinforced the need to explore other cover and protection devices, such as breast shells, which prevent friction in the nipple-areolar complex when used during prenatal care and not only during postpartum [ 12].

Nipple shields are thin, protective covers worn over the nipple while breastfeeding. Breast shells are hard, protective covers worn inside the bra. While sensitive or sore nipples are common in new mums, sometimes discomfort can occur because of the position you’re breastfeeding in, or because your baby has a poor breastfeeding latch, so again it’s a good idea to get assessed by a lactation expert or breastfeeding specialist in these circumstances. If you experience bleeding nipples, severe breastfeeding pain, or have symptoms of a breast infection, such as mastitis, it’s important to see your healthcare professional.
