Infused with traditional Roman herbs and botanicals including coriander – they use a variation of seeds synonymous with Roman life during the occupation of the wall. As well as chamomile, a botanical vital in providing sweet undertones, there are floral notes, and mint which contributes to its oriental flavour. When all of the botanicals come together, they provide a truly fragrant finish.Local junipers found on the fells are at the heart of their gin. Other native botanicals, such as bilberry, heather and hawthorn, also feature and all are combined with water sourced high up in the Cumbria fells from the River Derwent. The Lakes Distillery’s signature recipe creates an easy-drinking and award-winning artisan gin, with delicate floral notes and The Whitley Bay-themed tipple boasts the holy trinity of flavours that make for a delicious gin in my opinion: juniper, warming je ne said quoi spice and citrus. Mostly citrus for me, definitely pink grapefruit, it is peppery with juniper and coriander. Bittersweet and a not too hot alcohol finish. Great tonic always helps of course, this Lixir was ideal. From classic London dry gins to unique artisanal blends, we offer an extraordinary selection that will cater to every gin lover's palate. It’s been 37℃ this week so this went down like pop. I finished it with lemon but I do think even harsher pink grapefruit would have been great. Like this a lot! Ok not quite a spirit but an inspired mix which makes this tipple suitable at pretty much any time of day. And it's worth a mention as it has such a good story behind it. We might be some time off being able to sample the Northumbrian Single Malt from what is to be Northumberland's first commercial whisky distillery but it surely will be worth the wait. Recommended serve: N/A but I liked the sound of ‘Sherbert Lemon’: 1oz gin, 1/2oz limoncello, 1/2oz lemon juice, dash bitters, bitter lemonade. Build over ice, stir and top with lemonade + lemon wheel. They say: “A nice warm savoury combination of pink peppercorns and celery seed rounded by a mix of traditional gin flavours like angelica and coriander, with late hints of cardamom.
