About this deal

It’s more like a peat path this time round. Starting in the far north-west of Scotland on an improvised version of the Cape Wrath Trail, they are spurred by a wise hiker’s counsel to “put yourself in the way of hope” in search of what another sage in a cagoule dubs “trail magic”. When they reach Fort William, an impulse lures them onto the West Highland Way. And so it goes on, and on, with one cycling interlude – “a tsunami of miles”, as Winn styles it – via the Pennine Way, the Offa’s Dyke Path and beyond. An inspiring and beautifully written story of hope and healing . . . We, her readers, are privileged to walk alongside her * Countryfile *

As well as a portrait of a telepathic marriage of true minds, and a snapshot of a fretful island, this is a soaring lament and a tub-thumping tirade - for all that is being lost, for all that may yet be saved' TELEGRAPH From the glens of Scotland to the familiar shores of the South West Coast Path, this is the inspiring story of a thousand-mile journey and love letter to our land. This is the third book in a series, and while the reader may benefit from reading the first two novels, as I intend to do, this book is enjoyable on its own as well. Raynor’s husband Moth has Corticobasal degeneration. An insidious disease with no cure. A disease which is difficult to determine, only diagnosed when everything else has been ruled out. Raynor convinces Moth to go on a long healing walk. Trouble emerges even before they set off. Moth collapses on the ground ‘like a dead tree in a high wind’ near their Cornish home. Bringing him around, Raynor proposes a visit to the doctor, only to be met with fatalism. On the trail, Moth, who can barely muster the strength to chat with a couple of mountain bikers they meet, falls headfirst into a stream. Then came the disappointment and frustration of being unable to reach their intended start point on the trail. A chance encounter at Sheigra Beach helped bring some fresh perspective. An inspiring and beautifully written story of hope and healing . . . We, her readers, are privileged to walk alongside her' COUNTRYFILE It had worked when we were on the South West Coast Path in ways that we had been told were impossible,” she says. “It was the only hope we had. It was the only thing that had helped his health: climbing, nature and walking as much as we possibly could.

We were heading to the lighthouse at Cape Wrath itself, but the military had closed off the area and there was nothing we could do about that,” explains Raynor. “At that point Moth was like, ‘If it is not the Cape Wrath Trail, then what is it? What are we doing? It is not going to work …’ Homeless couple say walking South West Coast path was 'life-changing' ". ITV News. 20 April 2018 . Moth is not quite as well as he was when we finished walking that path last year. It is probably getting towards time for us to go for another walk.” She smiles softly. “But he really is in much better health than we could have even hoped for.” The narrow path on the hillside was like this,” she uses her hand to indicate the steepness and sheer drop. “There was dampness from the falls and then the roar of the water below us because it had been raining.

His gait became almost normal, his thoughts cleared, his short-term memory sharpened and movements that had been almost impossible before became easy. This shouldn’t have happened. CBD is a one-way street.” mida ma üldse saan Raynori ja Mothi loo kohta öelda sellist, mida ma eelmiste raamatute puhul juba öelnud poleks? siin läheb ikka edasi seesama lugu, mis algas mitu aastat tagasi Mothi diagnoosi ja nende kodutuksjäämisega; kodutuse teema sai lahenduse, aga ravimatu haiguse teema mitte. täiesti ootuspäraselt halveneb Mothi tervis uuesti ja täiesti ootuspäraselt asub 60-ste abielupaar (Raynor mõni aasta alla ja Moth mõni üle) jälle matkarajale, sest see on see, mis enne on aidanud. Raynor Winn knows that her husband Moth’s health is declining, getting worse by the day. She knows of only one cure. It worked once before. But will he—can he?—set out with her on another healing walk? Embarking on a journey across the Cape Wrath Trail, over 200 miles of gruelling terrain through Scotland's remotest mountains and lochs, Raynor and Moth look to an uncertain future. Fearing that miracles don't often repeat themselves.

Winn’s spoken sections are about more than giving narrative structure to the album. She is a brilliant scene-setter too: her lists of flowers and plants before Lemonday, for example, become a kind of meditation, a trance-like state where fiddle strings buzz and drone-like bees. Her reading style is unadorned, delighting in its own wildness. We learn a lot – about the withiers’ trade, for example – without ever feeling we are being preached to. It almost felt like a party on a path because everyone had their own joy that they were bringing to it. The West Highland Way was like a conveyor belt of humanity.”

The Cape Wrath Trail is hundreds of miles of grueling terrain through Scotland's remotest mountains and lochs. But the lure of the wilderness and the beguiling beauty of the awaiting glens draw them northwards. Being one with nature saved them in their darkest hour years earlier—and their hope is that this experience can work its magic again. Archer, Elizabeth (5 April 2018). "Couple walked 630 miles and lived in a tent after bad investment left them homeless". Daily Express . Retrieved 15 September 2022. By nature, we are ambulatory creatures. Our bodies are designed for movement. In an increasingly sedentary world, this is a story about walking. Walking long distances. Walking to heal. There was a point, admits Raynor, that the couple feared they might be trapped there forever. Then something incredible happened. A near-miracle that saw hope soar for the first time in many months. Travelling in a pandemic, though, brought an additional layer of complexity. Not only did they have the worry about the health implications of Moth potentially catching coronavirus, but many hotels, restaurants and cafes remained closed, making it challenging to source food and supplies. Winn also writes about nature, homelessness and wild camping. [12] Her second book The Wild Silence was published by Michael Joseph (a subsidiary of Penguin Books) in September 2020. [10] [13] It was shortlisted for the 2021 Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing . [14] Barnes, Dan (21 June 2023). "Gillian Anderson, Jason Isaacs filming Salt Path in Chepstow". South Wales Argus . Retrieved 30 June 2023. Raynor Winn’s The Salt Path was published in 2018 to critical acclaim and went on to become one of the most successful non-fiction books of the year. It’s a difficult work to pin down – part memoir, part treatise on the English landscape, part travelogue – it has at its heart the poignant journey undertaken by the author and her terminally ill husband, Moth. Just after Moth’s diagnosis, the couple were made homeless and decided on impulse to walk the South West Coast Path in its 630-mile entirety. The resulting book is a written record of a journey that was both physical and emotional, by turns lyrical, angry and sad, and always touched with hope and humour.
