Linda Nolan 'cries her eyes out' as she shares a heartbreaking cancer update and admits her fears that this Christmas could be her last Night Terrors: Troubled Sleep and the Stories We Tell About It is the work of Dr Alice Vernon, Lecturer in Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University.Dracula’, ‘Jane Eyre’ and the Brother Cadfael mysteries all make reference to parasomnias, as does Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. But Alice is convinced it’s only through thinking about and sharing these horrors that there’s any hope of lessening them. Indeed, this seems to be part of current medical thinking. Ever since she was a child, her nights have been haunted by nightmares of a figure from her adolescence, sinister hallucinations and episodes of sleepwalking. These are known as 'parasomnias'– and they're surprisingly common. Vanessa Bauer oozes elegance in a baby pink gown as she joins Hollywood's finest A-listers including Timothee Chalamet and Rowan Atkinson at the Wonka afterparty Now a lecturer in Creative Writing, Vernon set out to understand the history, science and culture of these strange and haunting experiences. NIGHT TERRORS, her startling and vivid debut, examines the history of our relationship with bad dreams: how we’ve tried to make sense of and treat them, from some decidedly odd ‘cures’ like magical ‘mare-stones’, to research on how video games might help people rewrite their dreams. Along the way she explores the Salem Witch Trials and sleep paralysis, Victorian ghost stories, and soldiers’ experiences of PTSD. By directly confronting her own strange and frightening nights for the first time, Vernon encourages us to think about the way troubled sleep has impacted our imaginations.

Great British Bake Off confirm fan favourite has left the Channel 4 show ahead of the final as viewers call for them to be made a 'fifth host' Sleepwalking is different, though. I don’t sleepwalk very much these days, so it’s quite unsettling when I do find evidence that I’ve been up and about at night. “Evidence” is exactly the right word; it’s like investigating a crime in reverse – I already know I’m the culprit, but now I need to find out what I’ve done. There’s a strange dissociation involved; I go on the trail of someone else, another me, whose actions I can’t predict. I love diving into archives and finding things I wasn’t expecting. Sometimes I get so involved in exploring collections and gathering bits of cool stuff that I forget I actually need to write something with it! I usually start quite broadly with research, and that points me down various avenues and helps me to make connections in terms of a chapter’s structure. Working along a timeline helps, too, but I’m always happy to change my plans once I’ve found something particularly fascinating! The dreams of the British public collected in World War II was something I stumbled across while down a research rabbit hole, and it’s one of my favourite sources in the book. I was intrigued by the potential of lucid dreaming to treat PTSD. Do you think it could also help other mental illnesses, such as depression or OCD? S Club's Hannah Spearritt takes a tumble during Dancing On Ice rehearsals she she gears up to take part in ITV skating showSleepwalking as it is currently understood, as something separate from RBD, seems to involve milder delusions that might be following a routine, or oddly, trying to provide assistance. Apart from occasionally doing something somewhat mischievous like hiding objects, my sleepwalks are characteristic of this. In my teenage years, my mum found me on a mission in the middle of the night to deliver a slice of imaginary cake to Gwen Stefani. A few years ago, I woke myself up by switching the light on and loudly announcing to an empty bedroom: “It’s okay, I’ll help you find it.”
