The Autobiography of a Flea purports to be the viewings of the sexual antics of Bella, et al., via the viewpoint of the aforementioned louse. However, there is very little of a flea’s life about this; it’s merely a conceit to regale jaded readers with descriptions of rape, gang rape, incest, sodomy and sacrilege. The only thing missing is enforced lesbianism and, given the tenor of one scene, you can only reason that it was left out because this book is not meant to appeal to women. It was clear that Ambrose was annoyed and discomfited at the abrupt participation of his " confreres " in the enjoyment of his latest acquisition, and he concocted a daring and devilish scheme to frustrate their interference, while at the same time appearing himself to be entirely innocent of the business.

Once past that basic fact, however, this book gets everything wrong, from the methods the leaders use to how their victims respond. But while the story itself is woefully inaccurate, I expect it represents the attitudes and beliefs of a certain sub-set of society of the time pretty accurately, which is what I was reading it for. I am not going to reproduce this discourse here as I heard it from my vantage-ground; it will be sufficient, if I explain the principal ideas if conveyed and relate the application. This is a fine example of the so-called “petticoat governance books.” While Englishmen may have been lords and masters of their homes and families, it’s clear from the popularity of this type of novel that many had secret submissive longings. This particular example features lots of incidents in which a young man is forced to wear women’s clothes, including a corset, and serve very dominant females’ whims as a young woman. The narrative includes explicit encounters with women and men, humiliation, bondage, discipline, a drag king, and some imaginative corporal punishments. Never had I longed so ardently to contribute to the discomfiture of a champion as on the present occasion, and moved by the complaints of the gentle Bella, with the body of a flea and the soul of a wasp, I hopped at one bound to the rescue.
