About this deal

When brushing your teeth, it is all too easy to get distracted and misjudge time. You can think you have been brushing for longer than you have. Brushing too hard will also wear away the outermost surface of the tooth. This is what dentists call abrasion. Abrasion itself can cause sensitivity to hot and cold.

It was Oral-B that really pushed smart technology into the toothbrush some years ago. The iO is the latest iteration with even more tech, including a display in the handle, previously only seen on the Oclean X before now. While only a handful of brushes make it into our list of the best electric toothbrushes, we’ve put many more to the test. The lower third of the brush handle has the Oral-B and Braun logo in white and then a battery and charging icon below them. CleanTeeth is another possible alternative. It is one of the better options, albeit a bit expensive and bulky in hand. With only a single cleaning mode on this brush the power button will turn the brush on and launch it into the ‘Daily Clean’ mode. Press it for approximately 2 seconds to turn the brush off.

The built in battery is rechargeable and will last for approximately 28 minutes or 7 days, based on one user. The same toothbrush, they may well be labelled with or without the ‘1’ in the name. The ‘1’ relates to a bit of a rebranding exercise undertaken by Oral-B. You may pay a couple of pounds extra for the Vitality than for the really cheap brushes, but you do get a toothbrush from a premium brand, Oral-B. It has good support and its replacement brush heads are easy to find online or in shops. It looks fantastic and feels great in hand. The smooth touch materials are good quality and easy to keep clean.

None of these extras are necessary. And nothing about this brush actually cleans your teeth better. The more premium brushes offer additional cleaning modes which are suitable if you have more advanced oral healthcare needs or are looking for a particular programme such as whitening.Once the pressure is relieved, the sensor is deactivated and normal brushing resumes. Medium importance — worth considering, but not critical Good battery life Unlike some toothbrushes, Oral-B does not automatically turn itself off after the 2 minute cleaning cycle is complete. You will need to do this. The battery life is higher with up to 10 days for the Oral-B Pro 1 than for the Oral-B Vitality 100 with only up to 8 days. All of the brush heads provide a good clean, in my opinion, the CrossAction is the best allrounder, although the Sensitive brush head (sold separately) may be better for those opting for an electric toothbrush for the first time or suffering from tender gums.

In terms of design, the 3500 isn’t as refined as top of the line models like the Sonicare 9900 Prestige and the Oral-B iO Series 9, but it is far cheaper. Internal pressure control– Reduces brushing speed and alerts you to be gentler if you brush too hard. When thinking about the safety of your brush, know that both manual and electric toothbrushes have the potential to cause harm when used incorrectly. An example is causing wear on the outside of the tooth by scrubbing too hard. Evidencehas shown that electric toothbrushes are of no greater concern to teeth and gums than a manual toothbrush, and some studieseven support the use of electric toothbrushes to prevent worsening tooth wear caused by over brushing. There are of course many similarities between these two brushes and both have some design and features I have not touched upon yet, but I believe are worth noting. There is a single button on the front of the brush handle, that stands out because it is white in colour. It has a convex design, and it slightly recessed into the handle. It is not the stiffest button to press, but it is not the softest either. There is a bit of resistance to it.For more information, read our Sonicare brushing modes or Oral-B cleaning modes article. Brushing intensity What you expect in terms of battery life from a toothbrush may be different from what someone else expects.

I do not suffer with sensitive teeth or have and gum conditions that would ultimately influence me to need the softer mode on a regular basis. It has a cleaner and more minimal design that aligns with other models in the range including the Pro 3. Colgate has offered good value brushes for many years. They haven’t been must-buy products, but they do what they need to. Oral-B and Sonicare have been better in product quality and cleaning power. The sonic cleaning action has always felt weaker in the Colgate brushes, and this still applies to the Colgate 250R. It is cheap, but the battery life and box contents are worse than the 250+ it replaced. The design is a bit more stylish though. With the Oclean X, the cleaning performance was great. The display was touch-sensitive and horrible to use. The iO’s display is not touch-sensitive. Despite this, the X has a lot going for it. It has a magnetic wall mount, great colour choices and it is affordable. The Pro 3 3000 is an equally good choice. The 3500 is a variant of the Pro 3. Technically they are the same. The 3500 comes with the travel case included. They are usually about the same price, making the 3500 a better buy.
