Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a variety of organisations and institutions have developed novel face shield designs and production methods. Based on a survey of these designs, four broad categories of face shields were identified. These categories are distinguished largely by the design, manufacturing procedure, and materials used in the face shield suspension system, which supports the transparent visor that provides the primary protective function.
