About this deal

These are worth considering for plenty of single figure handicappers as well as those mid-to-high handicappers who are usually targeted for irons of this type. Designed unlike anything to outperform everything - Wilson Staff's new D9 Irons feature a revolutionary new 'Intelligent Design' for the perfect blend of distance, forgiveness and unwavering consistency.

The D9 hybrids are available in six loft options (17˚, 19˚, 22˚, 25˚, 28˚ and 31˚) with the Mitsubishi Tensei AV Silver shaft and Lamkin Crossline Genesis grip. Shaft weight options include A (55 Series – 61 grams), R (60 Series – 64 grams), and S (70 Series – 77 grams). As you'd expect from a game-improvement iron of this size, Wilson have made the lofts nice and strong to help give you extra distance by combining with the low centre of gravity for higher, longer ball flights. With only two rows of Power Holes instead of the three we had with D7, we’re able to push a lot of material very low.” The D9 irons represents a technological advancement showcasing Wilson’s future approach to iron design and development,” said Jon Pergande, Manager of Wilson Golf Club Innovation. “This software uses over 100 processor cores of computing power to analyze the sequential versions of each club design we worked through before arriving on the final D9 line.”What we did here is let the computer give us insight into how to improve performance,” says Jon Pergande, Wilson’s Manger of Golf Club Innovation. “We gave the computer the ability to manipulate CAD models through different designs and then run them through simulations for ball speed and distance.”

The irons do excel in forgiveness however, thanks to a generous sole shape which just gives you a little extra margin of error and should stop you from digging into the turf on those heavy strikes. If you’ve been even a casual MyGolfSpy reader, you know the lower an iron’s CG, the easier it is to launch an iron high and, presumably, far. The target game improvement player needs help getting the ball in the air so a low CG is helpful. And lowering the CG while strengthening the lofts helps that player achieve some distance. The CG on D9 is roughly 50/1000 th’s of an inch lower than it was on D7. That may not sound like much but Pergande says it’s fairly significant in the world of iron design. These ball speed gains continue with the new ultra-thin face, which Wilson say is the largest and thinnest unsupported face that they have ever produced. It also features a larger sweet spot than in the D7 range to give you more from off-centre hits. Considering that conditions on the day of testing were firm and dry, I'd say that the stopping power was more than good enough and this is something that I saw throughout my round.

The D9 Power Holes are not symmetrical, they’re not the same size,” he says. “The heel side holes are a little wider than the toe side holes. And that was an interesting insight that said we had to free up the heel side of the face to add more performance to the entire face.” We offer custom fitting services at our Glasgow & East Kilbride stores where our PGA qualified staff will be able to advise. In player testing against some of the leading competitors in the golf industry, D9 irons consistently performed better across all relevant metrics, including a 2mph advantage in ball speed and a full eight-yard difference in carry distance. Due to the different techniques used in the printing of balls, different jobs may result in different finishes; this may be in the form of a mat or a gloss finish. Both 'pad printing' and 'digital printing' is used on different jobs resulting in slightly different finishes. General wisdom says anything over a 40-degree descent angle with a 7-iron is enough to hold most greens this side of Augusta National. Pergande says the descent angle with D9’s 7-iron is in the mid-40s while the 5-iron descent angle is right around 40 degrees.
