Summary: When two eleven year old kids; Cassandra, a self-proclaimed survivalist, and Max-Ernest, find a mysterious "Symphony of Smells", they stumble upon the suspicious death of a magician, some evil alchemists, and the existence of the Secret of life. It's Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L, the antagonists of the novel, are members of the Midnight Sun, a society devoted to finding the Secret in the hopes of gaining eternal life. Once they find out Cass and Max-Ernest have his notebook, they are willing to go to any lengths to take it from them. It is revealed that Dr. L is Pietro Bergamo's twin brother. He is described as tall with silver hair, tanned skin, and white teeth. Ms. Mauvais's attributes resemble those of a Barbie doll: big eyes, a tiny waist, stylish blonde hair, and gold jewellery. Thus, Pietro refers to her as the Golden Lady; he also notes her icy voice. Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L are much older than they look; they wear long gloves to hide their wrinkled skin, which only appears on their hands.Bosch, Pseudonymous (July 29, 2011). "Don't Read This". Chapter 16 (Interview). Interviewed by Fernanda Moore. Archived from the original on November 20, 2012 . Retrieved May 24, 2012. Now, don't get me wrong. I LOVE middle grade books. They are the only antidote to my eternally dark soul. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into and that I am not the target audience. But there were other, vaguer, harder-to-pin-down feelings, like: a pit in the stomach that means something is either really good or really bad or both. A feeling of being old and young at once. A sense of beginnings and endings happening at the same time. A certainty that your life is changing, but an uncertainty about how it's changing and whether you want it to.”

Max-Ernest: Max-Ernest is Cass’ best friend who is also part of the secret society that wants to uncover and protect The Secret. His parents are divorced, but they live in the same house as they want Max-Ernest to have a normal childhood. Max-Ernest also wants to be a comedian or magician, however his jokes often fall flat. DRINKING/DRUGS/SMOKING: there is a choclate that gives people visions of the past in the third and fourth book. A mysterious tale that's just right for kids. The tone is spooky but light-handed, and really gets kids in the atmosphere of a Big Secret. It also encourages their patience by dripping out the plot slowly while keeping them rapt with descriptions of kids and places and things. If you're reading this to them, don't be surprised if they interrupt you a lot to throw out their own ideas. Cassandra Truth: Played with. Cass is a survivalist that always predicts disasters, but they rarely come true.Write This Book: A Do-It-Yourself Mystery, a tie-in to the series, has a normal version of the disclaimer. There is, however, a label before it reading "Traditional (and absolutely completely totally sincere) disclaimer." The build up done from start up to the climax to the resolution of Book 1 is done beautifully. It presented the overall concept of the story while leaving you with some thing to wander. Makes you want to read book 2 immediately (which I am doing right now ) Amber is Cass's classmate, often called the nicest girl in school and third prettiest; however, she is often shown to be snooty and gossipy. She is a fan of the Skelton Sisters and a consumer of their lip balm line, Smoochies. She receives a new flavor each week and gives the old one away, often to Cass. Cass tells Owen to perhaps take it easy on the butler service, as she intends to buy herself more time to search for Benjamin. Unfortunately, Ms. Mauvais catches Cass in her office, and reveals that she knew who Cass was all along. But instead of taking Cass captive right away, Ms. Mauvais instead treats Cass to an elaborate dinner, claiming that a friend of Cass' will be present as well. Cass was more than surprised to see Max-Ernest waiting for her in the dining room, but was unable to warn her friend that something was terribly wrong. The following year, Bosch returned readers to the world of the Secret Series in Bad Magic, the first novel in what became the Bad Books trilogy.
