All Fall Down is the ninth instalment in the Southampton-based Detective Inspector Helen Grace series, and although many series’ may have been starting to flag at this point it's testament to Arlidge’s masterful plotting that this is one of the most riveting to date. Families like Isabel’s went from a world were land was expensive and labour cheap to one where land was in abundant supply and labour hard to come by. Since King’s disappearance, there have been sporadic sightings of him over the intervening years and there is a possibility that he is still alive, roaming free, finally seeking his vengeance and looking to finish what he started all those years ago.

Be warned though, with the conclusion to All Fall Down one thing for sure is that this series is heading down a completely different direction. Many medieval people were disinclined to blindly worship a God who had destroyed their entire family. Arlidge has worked in television for the last twenty years, specializing in high-end drama production, including prime-time crime serials Silent Witness, Torn, The Little House and, most recently, the hit ITV show Innocent. What took place between the beginning and ending was every bit as gripping with the fear from the victims leaping off the pages. With journalist Elena Garanita trying to muscle in as much as she can, trying to get the best scoops, using whatever tactics she can, most of the time not being helpful, just totally focused on what she can get to further her career, as well as trying to make the police look bad, or something to use as leverage. This is an author who knows how to hook his readers and delivers thrills and excitement with each chapter. Because if they’re meant to be a reflection of the young adult, it’s a rather one dimensional view of us. She also meets her brother Jamie's old friend, Alexei Volkov, who is the son of a senior Russian embassy worker.

There are more parallels with modern society (and particularly the climate crisis) and the fourteenth century than are perhaps comfortable.I'm not sure if I'm being just plain picky here but I love love loved the whole embassy idea being presented in a novel, and taking it up a notch in the upcoming instalments would be very much appreciated, because I can see that Ms. His panic is only increased when his hired driver takes him on a route with which he is not familiar. Sally Nicholls has a rare ability to tell a story from the past by making it both of its time and also accessible for today’s readers.
