About this deal

It comes with consequences, deservedly so, and while it’s not great watching characters you’ve been getting to know forced in this situation, I felt the ending and resolution was exactly what was needed. She helps Halti see what his dreams could be instead of what he thinks they must be, and they both let down their guard to let each other in. I love books with depth and great character development so now your review has me even more excited. And maybe that was intentional, but to me it just felt like the author realized that Henri needed a passion for the story to work and stuck one in without much thought.

Near the end of the book, there's a scene where Henri and his girlfriend are about to have sex for the first time but Henri (for reasons I won't spoil) isn't in the mood. Praise for FIELD GUIDE: “A witty debut with whip-smart dialogue that will find much love among fans of authors like John Green and Jason Reynolds. With a lot of humor and hustle, two seniors discover hidden depths to each other in this charming novel about New York City, pre-college anxieties, and finding yourself. Although it was still predictable at times and I did question some of our narrators actions and the way they were handled, I enjoyed it a lot and it was the light and fluffy contemporary I needed! That said, I really enjoyed the fact that academic pressure was explored so throughougly through Henri’s character.

It's time for him to prove that he’s more than just a charming guy, and that he is deserving of the opportunities he so desperately seeks. One who’s extremely driven, but kind of realizes high school passed her by as she was studying, and at the end is wondering what was the magic elixir she seemed to miss out on.

Unfortunately for him his neighbor Corrine has already figured out why he's seemingly the only one employed by this alleged company.I loved the characters of Henry and Corrinne's parents, their friends, and even the teachers at school.

We ain't gonna talk about Ming because he was a side character friend, and I didn't like that, but whatever. It’s a book that will make you laugh, will speak to a piece of your fears, and remind you of your own mistakes. The story also explores college stress and the whole college application race; how some teens are lucky and get in because of legacy, how some teens have to really 'standout', and how Black kids also face the pressure of being excellent following Obama's presidency. But one that illustrates its depths as Henri navigates being a first generation child of immigrants with their own dreams.I’m looking forward to reading it, but I have to admit, it’s not my favorite when a novel feels like it’s divided into two parts, with each part concentrating on something different. First generation Haitian-American Henri "Halti" Haltiwanger walks dogs early in the morning before school to make some money. That story had incredible characters, spectacular humor, and lots of emotional depth, and I saw all those elements on display in Charming as a Verb as well.
